ASICS professional and Arkansas graduate Payton Chadwick, the 2018 NCAA Division 1 indoor champion in the 60-meter hurdles and runner-up in the same event in February at the U.S. Indoor Championships in Albuquerque, N.M., joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss returning to competition for the first time in more than five months at the Back to the Track Series at Prairie View A&M and preparing for the Blue Oval Showcase on Aug. 29 at Drake Stadium in Des Moines, Iowa. Chadwick, a 14-time All-American and 12-time first-team honoree, revisits having to relocate from Fayetteville to Texas during the early part of the Coronavirus pandemic in order to be able to continue to train on a track. She reflects on her fitness in the spring and how well she was hurdling, along with her optimism toward competing in the 100-meter hurdles for the first time this year at Drake. Chadwick shares how significant having coach Chris Johnson has been in her career, both as a collegiate athlete following her transfer from Oklahoma and now as a professional, in addition to how meaningful the support has been in her training group, which includes fellow Arkansas graduate and ASICS professional Taliyah Brooks, along with forrmer Texas A&M standout and adidas pro Shamier Little. She expresses how impactful her transition was from a multi-event athlete at Arkansas to only focusing on hurdles, sprints and relays, and how that change was the catalyst for her individual title in 2018. Chadwick looks back at contributing to both Division 1 indoor and outdoor national team championships as a senior, part of Arkansas' calendar-year triple crown including cross country in November, and what it meant to run on both title-deciding 4x400 relays. She examines the magnitude of potential Name, Image and Likeness legislation for student-athletes, especially those competing in track and field, and how important sponsorships have been early in her professional career. Chadwick also talks about the role of food and nutrition in making her a better athlete and how profound Macrostax has been in not only helping her maintain a balanced diet, but also providing the right amount of fuel and energy to train at an elite level.
