ASICS professional and Idaho Distance Project athlete Makena Morley, a nine-time All-American at Colorado and member of the Buffaloes' 2018 NCAA Division 1 cross country championship team, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss patiently waiting for professional sponsorship during the Coronavirus pandemic and the opportunity to train with and learn from Emma Bates along with her husband and coach Kameron Ulmer. Morley reflects on the missed opportunities for herself and fellow seniors Dani Jones and Joe Klecker with the cancellation of the Division 1 indoor championship meet in March in Albuquerque, N.M., along with her potential to lower her Colorado program record in the 10,000 meters. Morley also examines her consistency in qualifying for every NCAA cross country and track championship during her career and revisits the highlight of capturing the national team title after not winning the Pac-12 or Mountain Regional meets in the weeks leading up to the final. She expresses gratitude for her recent time spent with family and how younger sister Bryn is dealing with not having a fall cross country season at Northern Arizona. Morley also explores the similarities between how the Colorado women's team established the foundation for its national championship and how Northern Arizona has recruited a similar collection of talent in recent years, looking to build on a 14th-place finish from last year. She remains optimistic that the Foot Locker National Championships will be held this year, reminiscing about her experiences as a four-time qualifier for the meet in San Diego. Morley speaks about her upcoming training focused on road racing, building toward competing in her first marathon in the fall or early next year. She also hopes to return to the track to race in the 10,000 at the Olympic Trials in June, in addition to competing in cross country, with the future goal of qualifying for a U.S. team to race internationally.
