Dayton Carlson, a senior representing Casteel XC Club in Arizona as a Southwest regional team qualifier, clocked a lifetime-best 14:54.81 as part of the Nike Cross Virtual championship schedule Tuesday on the 5-kilometer course at Tumbleweed Park in Chandler and joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to recap his exceptional performance. It marked the third time this season that Carlson had run the course, including a 15:07 effort Oct. 28 at the Chandler City Championships. Carlson, who won his first Arizona Division 2 state title Nov. 13 by achieving a 15:06.01 performance at Crossroads Park in Gilbert, became the 10th prep male athlete in Arizona in the past decade to produce a sub-15 effort on a 5-kilometer cross country course. Carlson expresses his gratitude for Nike creating the concept and schedule for the NXV championships and shares his ambitions for placing in the top 10 overall when the racing schedule is completed Nov. 24. He also examines how his college prospects have increased during the past month as a student-athlete at Casteel High and looks ahead to a 2-mile track race Nov. 28, matching Carlson against Division 1 state champ Xander Black of Brophy Prep.
