Lee University fifth-year student-athlete Christian Noble, who ran the fastest indoor 5,000-meter time in NCAA Division 2 history and is the current world leader in the event at 13:37.39, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss his pursuit of the Division 2 indoor 3,000-meter record 7:54.77 achieved by former Adams State national champion and current Tinman Elite professional athlete Sydney Gidabuday. Noble achieved the all-time 5,000-meter mark Jan. 24 at the first Magic City Elite event at the CrossPlex in Birmingham, Ala., and will attempt to break the 3,000 record on the same 200-meter banked track Jan. 31 at the second Magic City Elite event organized by Dave Milner. Noble reflects on eclipsing the 5,000 record of 13:41.08 set by former Abilene Christian standout Nicodemus Naimadu in 2005, and how significant running 13:48.68 in an outdoor 5,000 race in August at the Music City Distance Carnival in Nashville was to establishing the belief that he could run sub-13:40 this season. He also speaks about producing a faster collegiate time on a 200-meter banked track than former NCAA Division 1 All-Americans Morgan McDonald of Wisconsin, Cam Levins of Southern Utah, Chris Solinsky of Wisconsin and Marc Scott of Tulsa. Noble also examines the possibility of targeting the absolute Division 2 indoor 3,000 record of 7:50.81 achieved in 2018 by David Ribich of Western Oregon on an oversized track at the Dempsey Indoor facility in Washington. He also revisits running 4:00.60 in the mile in his indoor opener Jan. 16 at the CrossPlex in the UAB Vulcan Invitational, which elevated Noble to the No. 4 all-time Division 2 performer. Noble shares the benefits of summer training in 95-degree heat in Texas, and how it paid dividends during the fall cross country season, and has made him a mentally tougher competitor on the track. He analyzes the prospects of Lee challenging for a podium finish at the Division 2 indoor national meet, which could include the possibility of him running three events during the March 11-13 meet at the CrossPlex, as well as his potential during the outdoor season in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, where he hopes to qualify for the Olympic Trials in June at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore.
