Erin Reese, an NCAA Indoor and Outdoor All-American during her collegiate career at Indiana State, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal after producing a world-leading mark and elevating to the No. 4 all-time performer in the women's 20-pound weight throw Feb. 13 with a fifth-round mark of 81-9.50 (24.93m) at the Indiana State Invitational at the Sycamores' home facility in Terre Haute. Reese, who achieved the No. 8 performance in event history, also became one of only four throwers in history with at least three 24-meter efforts in the same series. She shares what it meant to compete against DeAnna Price, the reigning World Outdoor gold medalist in the women's hammer throw, who finished second with a 78-9 effort (24.00m). Reese reveals her disappointment over the USATF Indoor Championships being canceled as a result of the Coronavirus pandemic, and a missed opportunity to compete against reigning champion Janeah Stewart, one of only three athletes in event history to surpass the 25-meter barrier. She reflects on not only training in a junkyard during the summer and fall, but suffering a left foot injury that required more than two months of rehabilitation, before resuming training. Reese speaks about how much she has benefited from the consistent training of her career since returning from her injury and expresses gratitude for coach Brandan Bettenhausen continuing to be creative and adaptive with workouts in the fall and winter. She analyzes her development from a 74-8.25 (22.76m) personal best and being ranked No. 23 all-time in the weight throw entering the year to her level of achievement six weeks later. Reese also projects her potential in the hammer throw once the outdoor season begins and her goal to challenge Gwen Berry, Brooke Andersen, Price and Stewart at the Olympic Trials in June for a spot on the U.S. roster to compete in Tokyo this summer. She also describes her role as volunteer assistant at Indiana State, along with being a case manager at the Hamilton Center and working in the mental health field with younger students.
