Saginaw Valley State sophomore Cheyenne Williamson, who became only the fifth female athlete in NCAA Division 2 indoor history to win three titles in the same year by capturing the pentathlon, long jump and 60-meter hurdles championships March 11-13 at the CrossPlex in Birmingham, Ala., joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss her memorable weekend that propelled her to being selected USTFCCCA National Women's Field Athlete of the Year. Williamson, 21, became the only sophomore among the five women's competitors to secure three titles, in addition to being the only pentathlon champion among the distinguished quintet. She reflects on her personal-best 4,113 points March 11 in the pentathlon, which elevated Williamson to the No. 5 indoor competitor in Division 2 history, including 8.44 seconds in the 60-meter hurdles, 5-5.75 (1.67m) in the high jump, 36-9 (11.20m) in the shot put, 19-10.75 (6.06m) in the long jump and 2:22.56 in the 800 meters. Williamson examines her 207-point improvement from Jan. 29 at the Jet's Pizza Invitational, along with reminiscing about scoring 3,630 points in her first collegiate pentathlon in December 2019. She analyzes producing a personal-best 20-10 (6.35m) in the third round of the long jump March 12 to win a second title, ascending to the No. 7 indoor competitor in Division 2 history, and also the decision to pass her final three jumps to prepare for competing March 13 in the 60-meter hurdles final and 4x400 relay. Williamson expresses her respect for Minnesota State sophomore Denisha Cartwright, and being able to prevail by an 8.41 to 8.50 margin in the 60 hurdles championship race. She also speaks about how much she aspired to help Saginaw Valley State place in the top eight in the 4x400 relay, which the Cardinals just missed by clocking 3:54.19 to finish ninth, but also how meaningful it was to watch the distance medley relay secure fifth and All-America honors, contributing to a fifth-place team finish overall with 35 points. Williamson also shares her anticipation for competing in the heptathlon this spring, and how training with the javelin has been going, in addition to her excitement for running the 200 meters and the 100-meter hurdles.
