Georgia senior Marie-Therese Obst, a Norwegian standout who produced the best collegiate javelin throw ever achieved in March, in addition to the top mark by any Division 1 competitor since 2016 with her 201-foot (61.28m) effort March 26 at the Florida State Relays, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to reflect on elevating to the No. 4 performer in NCAA history and ascending to No. 7 in the world this year. Obst, who is originally from Germany and moved to Norway at age 8, shares how training during the pandemic and having the opportunity to compete this year has helped her rediscover the passion for the sport. She chronicles her journey from being one of the elite World U-20 athletes and throwing 188-5 (57.44m) in 2014 to being sidelined with a shoulder injury and not competing in 2016 and 2017, to rebuilding herself since arriving at Georgia and advancing to the Division 1 final as a freshman in 2018. Obst revisits her two experiences competing at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore., first at the World U-20 Championships in 2014 and again at the Division 1 Outdoor Championships in 2018, and having the motivation to return this June again for the NCAA final to complete unfinished business. She expresses gratitude for the support she has received from Bulldogs throws coach Don Babbitt, along with Georgia head coach Petros Kyprianou, and for their continued belief in her, despite a disappointing 2019 season when she didn't advance past the NCAA East Regionals in Florida. Obst reveals the confidence she gained from throwing 194-11 (59.42m) in her March 19 season opener at Georgia Tech and how that inspired her to perform even better at Florida State. She analyzes the pursuit of the collegiate record 204 feet (62.19m) established in 2016 by Texas A&M standout Maggie Malone and what it means to be one of six female competitors in NCAA history to ever surpass 61 meters, or 200 feet. Obst also speaks about training with Qatar national record holder Ahmed Magour and Georgia's quest to possibly sweep Southeastern Conference titles, as well as Division 1 crowns.
