Del Oro High junior Riley Chamberlain, a two-time California Division 3 state cross country champion and Nike Cross Nationals qualifier, along with an All-American at the AAU Cross Country Championships in December, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss her recent verbal commitment to Brigham Young University, joining Jenna Hutchins of Science Hill High in Tennessee as class of 2022 student-athletes who have already decided to attend college in Provo, Utah. Chamberlain, who boasts personal bests of 4:44.80 in the 1,600 meters and 10:21.31 in the 3,200, continues a family legacy of attending BYU, but reveals the most significant factors that contributed to her own decision, having followed the team since middle school. She shares how impactful and consistent Cougars women's coach Diljeet Taylor has been throughout the recruiting process and how inspiring it is to have the opportunity to run for a female coach who is also a wife and mother, who has also been mentoring young wives and mothers. Chamberlain explains how the #RunForHer platform adopted by Taylor and her student-athletes has motivated her when competing for Del Oro and Loomis Elite, in addition to wanting to be a better teammate and ambassador for the sport, along with a stronger presence in her community. She also speaks about how the Cougars' performances during the pandemic continued to inspire Chamberlain to also "win the wait" not only during an unprecedented past year, but also in the upcoming fall cross country season, with Del Oro having an opportunity to capture a Division 3 state team championship. Chamberlain expresses gratitude for her father Damon, along with Del Oro coaches Dustin Fee and Melissa Starkey, for continuing to provide structure and guidance in her running career, as well as the ability to train with Oregon signee Harper McClain of St. Helena High, along with junior Cate Joaquin of St. Francis High in Sacramento. She also reveals her desire to pursue a degree in education, and how BYU was the right academic environment to achieve that goal.
