University of Idaho shot-putter Zack Short joins DyeStat editor Doug Binder to discuss his unusual experience competing for the Vandals while living, studying and training on his own from home in Lebanon, Ore. Short won the OSU High Performance Meet shot put with 64-0.25 (19.51m) and is ranked in the top 20 in Division 1. After learning he could remain on the team with an extra year of eligibility due to the lost 2020 season, Short moved home and student-taught in his hometown last fall. Rather than pack up and move back to Moscow, Idaho for three months, he started graduate level courses online and has trained from home with frequent instruction from Idaho throws coach Brett Olsen. Short also serves his community as a volunteer throws coach for a middle school team. He has dual citizenship with Honduras and has an outside chance of representing the country at the Olympic Games, but his primary goal this spring is to qualify for the NCAA Championships in Eugene, about 40 minutes south of Lebanon. Short will compete next week at the Big Sky Conference Championships in Ogden, Utah.
