Arizona State graduate student-athlete Jorinde van Klinken, the world leader and Dutch national record holder in the discus throw following her 230-4 (70.22m) performance competing unattached May 22 at the USATF Throws Festival in Tucson, Ariz., joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss achieving the best throw ever by any collegiate competitor and preparing for the NCAA Division 1 Championships on June 9-12 at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore., as well as looking ahead to the European Under-23 Championships in July in Tallinn, Estonia, and the Olympics in August in Tokyo. She reflects on eclipsing the Dutch national record with a 216-4 (65.94m) competing unattached May 20 at the Tucson Elite Classic. A 2019 World Championships qualifier in the discus, van Klinken revisits her exceptional series May 22 in Tucson and competing against 2017 NCAA champion and Jamaican standout Shadae Lawrence and their trading leads, before producing the best throw in the world since 2018 in the fifth round. She reminisces about the emotions experienced and the outpouring of support from people in her home country, as well as the respect received from fellow members of the throwing community. The Pac-12 champion, van Klinken also examines how significant a role Arizona State throws coach Brian Blutriech has played, not only in her technical improvements as a thrower, but being able to manage expectations and how his experience in mentoring elite throwers has been instrumental in recent weeks. She analyzes the challenges faced encountering lightning and thunderstorms at the Division 1 West Regional on May 26-29 in College Station, Texas, and the relief van Klinken experienced in qualifying for the NCAA final in both the discus and shot put, with marks of 211-5 (64.44m) and 57-11.75 (17.67m), respectively. A 2019 European Under-20 Championships gold medalist and 2018 World Under-20 Championships bronze medalist in the shot put, van Klinken has also improved her personal best to 59-3 (18.06m) in Tucson. She explains how reassuring it has been to hear that the throwing rings at Hayward Field are less slick than when she first competed there April 17 at the West Coast Classic.
