Skyler Schuller, a rising junior at Coppell High in Texas representing Texas Express Pole Vault Club and a four-time national champion at the AAU Junior Olympic Games including the 15-16 division pole vault record of 13-11.25 (4.25m), joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to reflect on her memorable performances in Humble, Texas, after earning All-America honors in both the pole vault and heptathlon July 1-3 at The Outdoor Nationals, presented by Nike, at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore. Schuller, 16, became the first female athlete in the 15-16 division at the AAU Junior Olympic Games to win the heptathlon and pole vault in the same year, in addition to achieving a personal best and the top all-time clearance in the age group. She accumulated 4,864 points in the heptathlon, capped by a lifetime-best 2:21.87 effort in the 800, to follow her pentathlon victories at age 13 in 2018 and age 14 in 2019. Schuller, who had achieved a 13-8.25 (4.17m) indoor clearance July 24 at the Texas Express Summer Finale, improved her top outdoor mark with a successful first attempt at 13-11.25 at Humble, before taking three tries at 14-5.25 (4.40m). Schuller, who finished second in the UIL 6A state final with a 13-6 (4.11m) clearance May 8, elevated into the top five all-time among high school vaulters in Texas as well as the top five sophomores in U.S. prep history with her record clearance at the AAU Junior Olympic Games. She also ascended in the top five all-time competitors in Texas in addition to the top five sophomores in U.S. high school history with her 5,046 points in the heptathlon to finish fourth at The Outdoor Nationals, presented by Nike. Schuller produced four personal-best performances in the two-day competition, making her the only athlete to earn All-America honors in Oregon in both the heptathlon and pole vault. She expresses gratitude to coaches Don Kemp of Coppell and Chad Andrews of Texas Express for her development in the pole vault, especially in the past year, which has allowed her to become the only American prep female athlete to clear at least 13-11.25 in the pole vault (among 25 competitors who have achieved the feat outdoors) and surpass 5,000 in the heptathlon (among the 40 individuals who have eclipsed the prestigious barrier). Schuller also shares her passions for art and reading, along with hiking on family trips.
