Bailey Cossentine, a two-time NAIA national champion in the marathon and All-American in the indoor 5,000 meters during her career at William Jessup University, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss becoming only the fourth female athlete in NAIA history to win multiple marathon titles and just the third to capture individual crowns in consecutive championship events, and repeating as winner while 10 weeks pregnant. Cossentine, 24, who was 22 weeks pregnant at the time of the episode recording, shares the challenges of her preparation and competition during her pregnancy, especially in hot and humid conditions in May in Gulf Shores, Ala. Cossentine, one of two student-athletes in NAIA during the past year to win a national championship as a mother along with Leondra Correia of Indiana Tech, expresses how significant it was to have her 3-year-old son Matheson in attendance to watch her compete at her final NAIA championship race. Cossentine also reflects on U.S. marathon champion Aliphine Tuliamuk racing in the Olympic marathon seven months following her pregnancy, in addition to watching Israeli standout Lonah Chemtai Salpeter be affected by cramps with four kilometers remaining in the race in Tokyo while in medal contention. She also analyzes how impactful it was to watch Molly Seidel earn the bronze medal, becoming only the third American female to secure an Olympic podium finish in the marathon, along with Joan Benoit Samuelson and Deena Kastor. Cossentine also explains the research for the final paper for her Master's degree about the relationship involving marathon athletes and the effects of challenging climate and weather conditions. She also shares the motivation for her desired transition to competing in ultrarunning and racing on trails following the birth of her second child in the late fall and how soon she anticipates a return to training. Cossentine also speaks about the challenges being encountered by her husband Erik, who works for Cal Fire, and battling the latest group of wildfires in Northern California.
