Kentucky All-American Abby Steiner, the reigning NCAA Division 1 indoor 200-meter champion who shares the collegiate indoor record with former Harvard standout and 2018 national champ Gabby Thomas, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss her resuming practice after an Achilles' injury and preparing during the fall to return to competition for the first time since the East Regional outdoor meet in May. Steiner, who is equal to No. 2 in the indoor 200 in American history behind the 1996 effort of 22.33 achieved by Gwen Torrence as well as matching the No. 5 all-time global competitor, shares details of her rehabilitation and her desire to return to elite form during her senior year. She also explains how valuable the time away from the track was during the spring and summer to enjoy traveling and focus on her mental health, allowing her to return to training in August with a renewed focus and new aspirations for the upcoming indoor season. Steiner revisits the physical struggles she had to overcome just to compete at the Division 1 indoor championship meet in March, and how emotional it was to triumph in the 200 final, despite experiencing significant discomfort and having her training compromised ahead of the meet because of her Achilles pain. She explains the patience demonstrated during the spring and how challenging cross training was in order to try to compete at the East Regional in Jacksonville, and how grateful Steiner was to race again, despite not advancing to outdoor nationals in Oregon. Steiner describes how meaningful the opportunity has been to participate in an internship in Kentucky's Biomotion Lab and how much she has learned working with Brian Noehren, with the focus being on how movement and muscle dysfunction affect function and pain within individuals experiencing orthopedic injuries. She also speaks about how inspiring it has been to learn how the lab has developed innovative and effective treatments for lower extremity orthopedic injuries, especially for student-athletes, and how much Steiner has learned when it comes to the biomechanics of her own running, in addition to injury prevention and recovery. Steiner looks ahead to the prospects of Kentucky rebuilding its 4x400 relay into a national contender behind the return of Alexis Holmes from injury as well, along with veterans Megan Moss and Dajour Miles. The Wildcats are expected to compete Dec. 11 at the Cardinal Classic in Louisville, with Steiner entered in her first career indoor 300 meters, along with the 4x400 relay. Kentucky is scheduled to open its home schedule Jan. 14-15 at the Jim Green Invitational in Lexington.
