Zariel Macchia, a freshman at William Floyd High in New York, placed 12th overall at the Eastbay Cross Country Championships at Balboa Park's Morley Field in San Diego. Macchia covered the 5-kilometer course in 17:43.3 to help the Northeast place five scorers in the top 12, as the All-American lineup prevailed by a 29-54 margin over the Midwest. Macchia became only the fifth freshman female athlete from New York to earn All-America honors, joining Northeast teammate Karrie Baloga of Cornwall Central High and her 11th-place effort in 2019.
