Arika Harbo, a senior at Concordia-St. Paul and a three-time NCAA Division 2 women's high jump champion, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss competing at the 113th Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa. Harbo secured victory at "America's Athletic Classic" last year in the heptathlon with 5,029 points and cleared 5-9.25 (1.76m) to tie for fifth in the high jump. She is also scheduled to race for Concordia-St. Paul in the 4x400-meter relay and 1,600-meter sprint medley relay. Harbo examines the opportunity to compete April 29 against Miracle Ailes of Iowa Western Community College and Nebraska's Jenna Rogers, who took the top two spots in last year's high jump competition at Drake Stadium. She reflects on the challenges of competing in inclement weather at the Drake Relays, as well as during her heptathlon April 13-14 at the Bryan Clay Invitational at Azusa Pacific University, where Harbo overcame a challenging first day to still achieve a lifetime-best 5,193 points. Harbo revisits capturing back-to-back titles March 10 at the NCAA Division 2 Indoor Championships with a 5-10 (1.78m) clearance, in addition to achieving a personal-best 3,939 points in the pentathlon Feb. 25 at the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Indoor Championships at Minnesota State. She analyzes her quest to achieve a 6-foot clearance in the high jump after producing indoor and outdoor marks of 5-11.50 (1.82m). Harbo looks forward to participating May 25-27 at the Division 2 Outdoor Championships in Pueblo, Colo., and how much her experiences from February jumping at the USATF Indoor Championships in Albuquerque, N.M., will benefit her in understanding the recovery process involved with competing at elevation. She speaks about how significant it would be to repeat as Division 2 outdoor high jump champion, and win a fourth career NCAA title, along with competing against a deep heptathlon field that includes French athlete and Azusa Pacific freshman Esther Conde-Turpin, who prevailed at Bryan Clay with 6,007 points.
