Aspen Fears, a Nebraska-bound senior at Vista Murrieta High in California and the only female athlete to win three CIF-Southern Section Division 1 pole vault championships following her second-attempt clearance at 13-1 (3.99m) to secure the title May 11 at Moorpark High, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss her pursuit of a third straight CIF-Southern Section Masters title May 18 at Moorpark. Fears cleared 13-3 (4.04m) to win the Masters crown in 2022 and produced a personal-best effort of 13-4 (4.06m) to repeat last year. She shares her appreciation for the raised, fast runway at Moorpark High and her gratitude for being able to compete at the facility during several postseason meets throughout her career. Fears also explains the emotional balance of cherishing her final opportunities to compete at the Southwestern League finals and winning a third career title, along with CIF-Southern Section postseason events, while still remaining focused on her goals, including qualifying for a third opportunity to compete May 24-25 at the CIF State Track and Field Championships at Buchanan High's Veterans Memorial Stadium in Clovis, Calif. She revisits her past two experiences at the state meet and how much has been learned, which Fears hopes will be beneficial in preparation for last appearance and her quest to earn all-state honors and compete for the state championship. Fears reflects on the construction of the Big Red Barn facility in Menifee and how instrumental her father Scott and entire family were in providing opportunities during the COVID-19 pandemic for hundreds of pole vaulters, with the guidance of Doug Bouma and Derek Bouma, the support of Vaulter Club and Vaulter Magazine. She also speaks about how meaningful the guidance, support and collaboration has been with Doug Bouma and Derek Bouma, and how they have helped Fears develop from a beginner in junior high to one of the top competitors in CIF-Southern Section history and one of the elite prep pole vaulters in the country this year. Fears shares how much of a relief it was to be able to choose Nebraska during the fall, and how impactful the support has been from Cornhuskers head coach Justin St. Clair, in addition to pole vault coach Mike Bartolina. She also looks ahead to competing in June at Nike Outdoor Nationals and the USATF Under-20 Championships at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore. Fears also highlights the many friendships the pole vault community has created throughout her career, and how much she is looking forward to competing with fellow senior and 2022 state champion Jathiyah Muhammad of Pittsburg High at their last meet together in California.
