Karsyn Leeling, a Nebraska-bound senior at Sidney High and the state record holder along with the national prep outdoor leader this season in the girls high jump at 6-1.50 (1.87m), joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss sweeping the high jump, long jump and triple jump titles and contributing to a program-record 49.05 seconds to place second in the 4x100-meter relay May 15-16 at the Nebraska Class B state final at Burke Stadium in Omaha. Leeling, 18, cleared 5-9 (1.75m) in the high jump, in addition to achieving marks of a wind-aided 18-9.50 (5.73m) in the long jump and a wind-legal 37-2 (11.33m) in the triple jump to capture all three championships in the same year for the first time in her career. She also reflects on her high school graduation May 18, in addition to looking forward to upcoming high school all-star game opportunities in both basketball and volleyball in the coming weeks. Although she excels in several individual events, Leeling explains how much the team dynamic of competing on the 4x100 relay in track or participating in volleyball and basketball have enhanced her high school athletic experiences, especially representing a small town in the western part of Nebraska. She also shares how valuable it has been to have mentors and coaches like Paul Newland, Matt McKay, Tyler Shaw and Austin Lewis throughout her career across multiple sports at Sidney, in addition to expressing gratitude for the support of her family, especially her mother Amanda Sharman, who travels with Leeling to every athletic competition. Leeling also speaks about how significant a role her faith has played in her life, especially this year when the family lost Karsyn's cousin, Kendra Jane, following a long battle with cerebral palsy. She shares how honoring the memory of her cousin provided Leeling inspiration during competitions the past two months, especially April 13 at the Alliance Invitational, where she achieved the Nebraska state high jump record and equaled the No. 19 all-time U.S. prep outdoor competitor, helping her join Morgan Smalls and Wendy Brown as the only three prep female athletes to clear at least 6-1 in the high jump, produce an 18-foot mark in the long jump and a 37-foot effort in the triple jump in American high school history. Leeling examines how she still needs to qualify for the U.S. Olympic Trials in June at Hayward Field in Oregon, since USATF has decided not to consider marks from high school-only competitions this year. She also reminisces about competing last year in Australia and looking forward to returning again this summer representing the United States at the event showcased by Coast 2 Coast International Athletics. Leeling also shares her excitement about joining the Nebraska program under the guidance of head coach Justin St. Clair, along with assistant and high jump mentor Dusty Jones, and being challenged next year by the elite jumpers in collegiate track and field, including Cornhuskers' teammate Jenna Rogers. She also analyzes the balance of maintaining a modeling career and being an elite athlete, and how significant the commitment has been for Leeling in order to maintain her fitness level and strength, in order to excel in both areas, and how much she has enjoyed being an ambassador for Charlotte and Emerson Couture.
