Amelia Nadauld, a sophomore at Snow Canyon High and an eight-time Utah Class 4A state champion as well as the classification record holder in the 200 meters with a wind-legal 24.12 seconds, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss capturing four titles May 18 at Brigham Young University's Clarence F. Robison Track. Nadauld, 16, repeated in the 100-meter dash, 200 meters and long jump, in addition to capturing her first Class 4A crown in the 300-meter hurdles after prevailing in the 400 meters last season. She prevailed in the 100 in 12.08 after clocking 12.02 in the prelims, won the long jump with a leap of 18-7.50 (5.68m), and triumphed in the 300 hurdles in 42.58, all in less than three hours, before achieving back-to-back 200 victories in a wind-legal 24.47 to complete her schedule. Nadauld joined Violett Taylor from Rich High in Class 1A as the only female athletes in Utah to win a combined eighth state championships during the past two years. She shares how the challenge of the 300 hurdles inspired her and explains how she has been able to accelerate her learning curve so rapidly to clock 42.02 on May 4 at the PACS BYU Invitational, despite still learning the proper hurdling technique, step pattern and adjusting her lead leg and trail leg over each barrier. Nadauld examines how significant the PACS BYU Invitational is for Utah prep athletes, and speaks about how much she enjoys competitors from all classifications being able to square off in the same events. She shares how she overcame pre-race nerves and anxiety earlier in her track career, and how Nadauld has been able to find peace and remain calm, despite the emotions involved with high-level competition at a state final. Nadauld express gratitude for the guidance and leadership of her Snow Canyon coaches, in addition to sharing her appreciation for the love and support of family, friends and teammates throughout her career. She analyzes how beneficial it has been to race at national competitions like the Arcadia Invitational in California, Great Southwest Classic in New Mexico, along with Nike Outdoor Nationals at Hayward Field in Oregon, and how proud Nadauld is to be able to represent Utah at those meets. Nadauld also shares that she is not rushing into training or competing in the 400-meter hurdles until she feels comfortable, and how her focus remains on improvement in the 300 hurdles and eclipsing the 42-second barrier, before taking on the next career challenge. She also reflects on competing in post-state events in past years and how much Nadauld has learned about managing energy and emotions, and maintaining the proper motivation to continue to train and compete during the summer.
