Gabby Morris, a former soccer goalkeeper at Colorado State and four-time NCAA Division 1 finalist in track and field for the Rams including a Mountain West Conference champion in the discus throw and shot put along with a first-team All-American in the discus, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss competing June 6 and 8 at the Division 1 championship meet at Hayward Field in Oregon. Morris, the former Gabriella McDonald now married to NCAA finalist for the Rams in the discus and javelin Jackson Morris, secured seventh place in the discus with a mark of 189-6 (57.76m) at last year's NCAA final in Austin, Texas. She revisits the Division 1 West Regionals in Fayetteville, Ark., and producing a personal-best 59-8.25 (18.19m) in the shot put to join teammate Mya Lesnar in advancing to the final in Oregon, in addition to qualifying along with teammate Michaela Hawkins in the discus. Morris examines Oregon standout Jaida Ross becoming the first collegiate female competitor to surpass the 20-meter mark in the shot put in Arkansas, improving on her own NCAA record. She also highlights how significant it is for the Mountain West Conference to be represented at the Division 1 championship meet by not only the Colorado State women's competitors, but also Fresno State's Jordyn Bryant in the discus and shot put, Amelia DiPaola in the hammer throw and Harriette Mortlock in the javelin throw. Morris explains how she has had to adjust training and adapt her workouts in order to overcome discomfort in her back, and how gratifying it has been to still be able to produce a lifetime-best performance in the shot put, along with throws near her personal-best 196-0 (59.75m) in the discus, as well as being able to also compete in the hammer at the Mountain West championship meet in an effort to help the Rams capture the women's team title May 11 in Fresno, Calif. She expresses gratitude to Colorado State head coach and her mentor in the throwing events Brian Bedard for his support, wisdom, guidance and perspective throughout her collegiate career, in addition to analyzing the significant role the Rams' athletic training staff has also played in her success, helping her develop into one of the most well-rounded throwers in the country, especially at 5 feet, 8.50 inches. Morris also shares how impactful her faith has been and how her spiritual journey has contributed to her athletic experiences. She also speaks about her and Jackson's decision to have a wedding that showcased a Viking theme, and how that was the most authentic representation of their personalities and relationship.
