Michigan State Sprinter, Long Jumper Tony Martin Killed In ShootingPublished by
MSU Track Athlete One Of Two Men Shot At Gas Station By Doug Binder, DyeStat Editor There is sad news out of Michigan this morning, where Michigan State freshman Tony Martin has died after what police are calling a double homicide overnight at a Sunoco gas station in Saginaw, Mich. Martin was not named in the news report, but the 19-year-old Saginaw native was the subject of tributes on Twitter later Sunday morning. Another man, 21, was also shot and later died. Martin competed in February for Michigan State in three events -- the 200 meters, 4x400 relay and long jump -- at the Big Ten Indoor Championships. As a high school senior, Martin made waves with a reported long jump measurement of 26 feet, 6 inches, a mark that was reported as No. 5 all-time and a Michigan all-time best. The mark was such an outlier that Track and Field News ultimately did not include it on the 2019 U.S. list. His second-best performanc was a wind-aided 24-0.50. He placed 24th at New Balance Nationals Indoor (22-1). The Detroit Free-Press wrote about the 5-foot-7, 155-pound Martin last year. Martin had a big personality and bright future. We extend our deepest condolences to his friends and family. More news |
