Athletes preview soaked Balboa Park course

Conner Mantz has been to three Foot Locker Finals course runthroughs, but he's never seen Morley Field at Balboa Park the way he saw it Friday.

It began raining very hard in San Diego early Friday morning and never let up until the afternoon. When the busloads of Foot Locker finalists went over the course after breakfast it was inundated with water.

Every step was on the green lawn was squishy. The bare patches were muddy.

"It was crazy-weird," Mantz said. "In my mind, I remember when it's great weather here. But it was covered in mud and it felt like this is a new course almost."

The course will probably dry out somewhat overnight, but additional showers could keep things wet.

Runners looking for any advantage they can get on Saturday were spinning the conditions into good news.

"(The rain) made it muddy and made me pretty excited for it," Mantz said. "Anything can happen. I think it could be more of a tactical race. (The win) could go to who wants it the most."

The girls race is scheduled to go off at 9:15 a.m. and the boys follow at 10 a.m.

Newcomer to Foot Locker Olin Hacker, runner-up at NXN last weekend, said he expects the course to be "good either way."

"We'll see how it drains," he said. "It's definitely a tough course. Those hills are pretty big."

Following the course preview, the athletes returned to the Hotel Del Coronado to change and then went back to downtown San Diego for a private screening of "McFarland USA," the new movie starring Kevin Costner that tells the story of coach Jim White and his success turning migrant farm workers into state cross country champions.
