Bolt to See German Doctor for Back Injury Sustained in Ostrava

By Adam Kopet, DyeStat Editor

Usain Bolt was not all smiles in Ostrava for the Golden Spike, despite the many celebrations around his final appearance at the event. He won the 100 meters, but he was slowed by a back injury.

Bolt's winning time of 10.06 was off his season best from the Racers Grand Prix in Jamaica and the race was much closer than expected. Cuba's Yunier Perez finished second in a personal best of 10.09.

According to Sean Ingle of the Guardian, Bolt will be seeing German doctor Hans-Wilhelm Müller-Wohlfahrt for his back injury.

Dr. Müller-Wohlfahrt is the team doctor for the German national soccer team and he was the club doctor for Bayern Munich 38 years.

However, Dr. Müller-Wohlfahrt has been seen as controversial. He has injected patients with calves' blood, honey and an extract from the crests of cockerels.

Bolt has been seeing Dr. Müller-Wohlfahrt for several years. He has previously helped Bolt through back pain as well as a hamstring injury in the lead-up to the Rio Olympics last year.

“He’s the only person I’ve been to over the years that has figured out a way to make sure my back is OK so I can compete and I can stay on track," Bolt said last year.

This year, in Bolt's final year before retirement, if he has any concerns he has not expressed them.

“I am going to see my doctor now so I know he will fix every problem,” Bolt said in Ostrava. “Then all I need to do is train hard and get myself into some shape. One run doesn’t really matter to me – it always comes down to the championships.”

The IAAF World Outdoor Championships in London begin on August 4. Bolt has five weeks to get his injury sorted and get his fitness level where he wants it. He is scheduled to compete in the 100 meters and the 4x100 relay.
