Eliza McCartney Gets World Lead in Pole Vault in Jockgrim, GermanyBy Adam Kopet Eliza McCartney won the women's pole vault Tuesday in Jockgrim, Germany, clearing a world-leading 16-2.50 (4.94m). It was a big clearance for the 21-year old from New Zealand who also broke her own national record. Her previous best came last month with a clearance of 16-1.75 (4.92m), but that was less than Jenn Suhr's 16-2 (4.93m) clearance from April. McCartney first came to prominence on the international stage when she captured a bronze medal at the 2016 Olympics in Rio. Finishing second in the competition in Jockgrim was Suhr with a best of 15-11.75 (4.87m). She took one jump at 16-2.50, but retired from the competition after that. In the men's competition, Mondo Duplantis, fresh off his win last week at the IAAF World U-20 Championships, won with a clearance of 19-0.25 (5.80m). More news |
