2018 Tops Most Ever New U.S. Sub-Four-Minute MilesPublished by
2018 Adds 28 New U.S. Sub-Four-Minute MilesBy Adam Kopet The year 2018 has been one for the history books for American milers. Earlier this year, Emmanuel Bor became the 500th American to break four minutes for the mile. Now, according to Track and Field News, 2018 has produced the most new American sub-four-minute miles ever with 28 men running under four minutes for the first time. The most recent men to achieve the mark were Charlie Marquardt (3:55.97) and Jacob Thomson (3:57.07) at the Sir Walter Miler. They were also the 520th and 521st men to break four minutes for the mile. The previous best year for new American sub-four-minute miles was 2016 when 27 Americans broke four minutes for the first time. At least 18 Americans have broken the mark each year since 2012. At this point, there are few chances remaining for athletes to break four minutes for the mile on the track. There is the Long Island Mile in September and there are a few indoor meets in December that could produce a fast mile race. Last year, Donavan Brazier ran 3:59.30 at a December indoor meet in College Station. Oregon's Cooper Teare, pictured above, was the third American to break four minutes for the first time this year.
