Beatrice Chepkoech: The distance runner from Kenya broke nine minutes three times in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, including breaking the world record with an 8:44.32 clocking in Monaco. She won the Diamond League title in the steeplechase and added a silver medal in the 1,500 meters at the Commonwealth Games.

Christian Coleman: The American sprinter started the year off with a bang, bettering the long standing 60-meter indoor world record three times on the way to winning the USATF Indoor and IAAF World Indoor titles. His best of 6.34 took 0.05 seconds off the record. He also won the Diamond League title in the 100 meters and was the fastest man in the world this year at 9.79.

Shelby Houlihan: The American distance runner broke the American record in the 5,000 meters in Huesden-Zolder, running 14:34.45. She also won USATF titles in the 1,500 and 3,000 meters indoors and the 1,500 and 5,000 meters outdoors. Houlihan finished just outside the medals at the IAAF World Indoor Championships in both  the 1,500 and 3,000 meters and she won two Diamond League 1,500-meter races and finished second in the Diamond League final, breaking four minutes in all three races.

Caterine Ibarguen: The jumper from Colombia went undefeated in the triple jump in 2018 and she won four of her six long jump competitions. She swept the Diamond League titles in both the long and triple jumps, competing on consecutive days in different cities.

Jakob Ingebrigtsen: The Norwegian teenager spent all year taking names of some of the best runners in the world and breaking records. He bettered Alan Webb's high school mile time at the Prefontaine Classic, running 3:52.28. After winning silver and bronze medals at the IAAF World U-20 Championships in the 1,500 and 5,000 meters, he won the senior double at the European Athletics Outdoor Championship, becoming the youngest man to win a European title and becoming the first man to win the 1,500 and 5,000 meters at those championships.

Eliud Kipchoge: The Kenyan distance runner only raced twice in 2018, but he made the most of his performances, winning the London Marathon in hot weather and then destroying the world record at the Berlin Marathon. He ran 2:01:39 in Berlin, taking 1:18 off the record.

Abraham Kiptum: The distance runner from Kenya added his name to the history books by breaking the world record in the half marathon with a time of 58:18.

Desiree Linden: The American distance runner overcame the cold, wind and rain in Boston to become the first American woman to win the Boston Marathon since 1985. Her time of 2:39:54 was the slowest winning Boston time in 40 years, but the weather so cold and wet, the elite athletes were allowed to race in their warm-up gear if they chose.

Kevin Mayer: The multi-event athlete from France broke the world record for the decathlon, taking over the top spot in the history of the competition for the world's best athlete from Ashton Eaton at the Decastar competition. Mayer scored 9,126 points, bettering Eaton's record by 81 points. He set personal bests in the 100 meters, long jump and javelin en route to the record.

DeAnna Price: The American thrower won eight of her nine hammer competitions this year, finishing the year as the American record holder and the No. 2 ranked thrower in the world. Her best mark of the season came at the USATF Outdoor Championships with a mark of 256-3 (78.12m).

Abderrahman Samba: The hurdler from Qatar became the second man to ever break 47 seconds in the 400-meter hurdles, running 46.98 in Paris. He went undefeated in the 400-meter hurdles, including six Diamond League wins. Samba skipped the Diamond League final to compete in the Asian Games. He won his primary event and helped bring Qatar gold in the 4x400 relay.

Caster Semenya: The middle-distance runner from South Africa won 25 of the 28 races, including heats, she started this year, going undefeated at her primary distance of 800 meters. She finished the year with 49.62 for 400 meters, 1:54.25 for 800 meters, 2:30.70 for 1,000 meters and 3:59.92 for 1,500 meters. She was also Commonwealth Champion at 800 and 1,500 meters.
