Best of DyeStat: Laura Duffy's top photos of 2018 By Doug Binder, DyeStat Editor Laura Duffy is a P.E. teacher in the Chicago suburbs who has been helping us out with photo coverage in Illinois and the Midwest for the past couple of years. In 2018, she did a bit more. In the spring, she traveled to Des Moines for the Drake Relays and also to Greensboro, N.C. for the New Balance Nationals Outdoor. She also contributed in the fall to our coverage of the Chicago Marathon and NCAA Division 1 Cross Country Championships. Here is a sample of some of Laura's best DyeStat photos. How does it feel to break a national high school record? Jazmine Tilmon of Western Branch VA reacts to her shuttle hurdles relay team's record-breaking time, and victory over rival Bullis MD, in 54.67 seconds.
Of all the photos we snapped this year of North Rockland NY star Katelyn Tuohy, this one perhaps best captured the joy of an athlete who is on the climb to legendary status in high school running. Laura took this photo as Tuohy turned to greet her parents after break the national high school record in the mile.
It's possible that one day photos like this one will be commonplace. But the co-ed 4x400 relay at New Balance Nationals Outdoor brought about something new -- the cooperation of boys and girls as they joined forces in a high level athletic event.
On the final day of New Balance Nationals Outdoor, I asked Laura to shoot athletes with their dads for a special gallery of Father's Day photos.
Here's a photo with a story. Laura was waiting patiently for a shot of Joan Benoit Samuelson before the finish line of the Chicago Marathon when she saw these two guys. She took the photo and gave us the backstory. STORY
Foot Locker Midwest was really muddy this year.
Laura took a bunch of photos of Glenbard West IL star Katelynne Hart in 2018. This one, at the Magis Miles, captures Hart as she's breaking the all-time Illinois mile record.
It was a homecoming of sorts for Missouri's Karissa Schweizer at this year's Drake Relays.
In the first leg of Taylor Ewert's historic June double, the Beavercreek OH standout won the 2,000-meter steeplechase at New Balance Nationals Outdoor in North Carolina. (The next day she shattered the U.S. junior record in the 10,000-meter racewalk in Indiana).
On the way to a Foot Locker cross country title, Cole Hocker of Indianapolis Cathedral IN (2022) won his first big postseason race at NXR Midwest.
