College/Pro Storylines at Penn Relays

By Doug Binder, DyeStat Editor

Here are some of the College/Pro Storylines we’re following this week at the 125th Penn Relays in Philadelphia.

Programming Note: You can watch the live Webcast here of the meet Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The USATF.TV broadcast and on-demand videos will only be available for USATF.TV +PLUS subscribers. Subscribe here.

Villanova Women Pursue More Wheels

Philadelphia's Villanova University takes the Penn Relays as seriously as any track team in the meet. Success in the Wildcats program is measured in wheels.

The women's distance medley relay team will go after its seventh championship in eight years and 17th overall.

Rachel McArthur leads things off and will be teamed with Danielle Burns (400), Amari Onque-Shabazz (800) and Nicole Hutchinson (1,600).

Notre Dame - The Irish Are Coming

Check out this week's story by Dave Devine on the Notre Dame men's distance medley relay team, truly a squad that is more than the sum of its parts. STORY

Notre Dame is seeking its first Penn Relays victory in a men's relay since 1943. The NCAA Indoor champions are the ones who can put the Irish back on the podium.

Indiana, Wisconsin and Villanova will have something to say about it. The Wildcats have won this event a record 25 times.

Standouts In The Field Events

Defending women's javelin champion Kylee Carter of Auburn is coming in strong after improving her personal best to 188-6 last month.

Florida State junior Shanice Love, the defending discus throw champion, threw a new PR of 201-11. She also is a former high school champion, breaking the meet record when she threw for Excelsior of Jamaica.

A trio of 26-footers entered in the men's college long jump, topped by defending champion Yann Randrianasolo of South Carolina. He jumped a new best of 26-5.75 on April 13. Guyana's Emanuel Archibald (26-6.25) and Middle Tennessee State's Fabian Edoki (26-3.50) could make this an exciting competition.

Defending champion Adam Kelly of Princeton is back in the hammer, where he has a best of 234-1. He was the runner-up in the NCAA Indoor weight throw last month.

Houston Making A Statement In Sprints

Another college program that is an adamant supporter of the Penn Relays in spite of changing landscape is Houston. Cougars coaches Leroy Burrell and Carl Lewis love bringing their athletes to Franklin Field and they enjoyed big success in 2018. That feeling comes from experience. Both men anchored Houston to Penn Relays titles in the 4x100, Lewis in 1980 and Burrell in 1989.

The men's 4x100 relay team is back to defend its title and ran 38.45 while getting beat by LSU at Texas Relays last month.

Houston's top competition could come from Jamaica, and 2016 and 2017 winner G.C. Foster.

Houston is also the reigning champion in the 4x400 and brings back Kahmari Montgomery, whose 43.4 split was the fastest ever run at Penn Relays.

Wisconsin Seeks First Men's Win At Penn Relays Since 1916

Wisconsin has the rare opportunity to pair two NCAA champions in distance relays and the most enticing could be the 4xMile. NCAA cross country and track champion Morgan McDonald, and 2018 NCAA 1,500 meters champ Oliver Hoare, who recently ran 3:37.20 at Bryan Clay, give the Badgers an incredible 1-2 punch.

Villanova will be motivated as well. Anchor Casey Comber will try to deliver another wheel for the Wildcats after anchoring 4xMile and DMR victories last year. Villanova seeks its 20th title in the men's 4xMile.

USA vs The World

The home fans had a lot to cheer about last year in the USA vs The World segment at Penn Relays. The draw for U.S.-Jamaica is big in Philadelphia, and the Saturday afternoon session will have moments that feel like a college football game. It's one of the most exciting experiences for track and field spectators in the world. Lineups won't be locked in until an hour before the start time. TEAM USATF ROSTER
