Shaunae Miller-Uibo Sizzles with World Leading 49.05 400 Season Opener

By Todd Grasley for DyeStat

Olympic gold medalist Shaunae Miller-Uibo put the world on notice Saturday afternoon in Gainesville, Fla. with a world-leading 400-meter time of 49.05 seconds to win the Tom Jones Memorial meet. It’s the fastest opener ever for the Bahamian and just eight-hundreths of a second shy of her personal-best 48.97 from last year’s Diamond League Meeting in Monaco, which ranks 10th all-time.

“To be honest with you, we were just planning on it being a nice tempo training run,” said Lance Brauman, who has coached Miller-Uibo since 2015. “It sounds crazy because she ran so fast and it looked like she was running in control and kept it smooth all the way around the track.”

Miller-Uibo made it look easy at the Percy Beard Track Complex, beating Pure Athletics teammates Shakima Wimbley (51.32) and Chrisann Gordon (51.33), as well as Florida senior Sharrika Barnett (51.88) by two seconds.

Brauman said the Rio Games champion's charge threw everyone else out of their race rhythm and even surprised him.

“From my perspective, I didn’t think that it was going to be that fast,” he noted. “I train her every day, so I know she is fit. She’s in really good shape, and training has been going well, but 49.05 is pretty fast. If she ran 49.8 or 49.9, I would have been happy.”

In her previous two season openers, Miller-Uibo clocked times of 49.7 and 49.8. With a successful 2018 in the books and another year to get older and mature on the track, Brauman decided to put a little more volume in the 25-year-old's training plan this year.

“It’s proven to be a good move this year,” Brauman said. “Where we are in training this year, it is faster than I thought she’d go, and that should prove well later on.”

The focus of the year is the IAAF World Championships in Doha, Qatar the first week of October. Because of that, Miller-Uibo doesn’t have many races early in the season. The group will go back to regular training for the month of May and then race three times in June, followed by three races in July. After that, she will come back for more training in August, before opening her Diamond League schedule at the end of the month.

“We’re going to go into Doha ready to run,” Brauman said. “The emphasis will be on the 400 meters at the World Championships this year.”

With a 49.05 already under her belt in April and a 48.97 personal best, just how low can she drop her time before her career is over?

“She’s ultra-talented and I think there is a lot more there,” he added. “I don’t ever like putting times on anyone, but there’s a lot more there than we saw today.”
