GREENSBORO, N.C. -- The longer the race, the more Sydney Masciarelli shines.

The sophomore from Northbridge, Mass., who broke out onto the national running scene last fall when she won the Foot Locker National Cross Country Championship, added another national title Friday evening at Aggie Stadium on the campus of North Carolina A&T.

Masciarelli won the 5,000-meter title in 16 minutes, 16.2 seconds, breaking her own sophomore class national record in the process.

"It's been great figuring out what her events are, and really knowing that longer distances are sort of where the magic happens for her," Emily Gaudet, Masciarelli's coach at Marianapolis Prep said.

Masciarelli and Saratoga Springs NY senior Kelsey Chmiel were two of the favorites to win the NBNO's first championship distance race. Along with Lydia Russell of Phoenix PA, the three girls ran out front of the pack for most of the race. Running smart and patient, Masciarelli was able to take the lead toward the final 800 meters and pull away for the victory.

"We were bummed," Gaudet of not having North Rockland star Katelyn Tuohy in the race. "I think they would have pushed each other, but ultimately it's about running your best time and she (Masciarelli) managed to do that anyway."

Chmiel finished runner-up in 16:18.57, while Russell was third (16:18.72).

Leading up to nationals, in addition to her prep track schedule at Marianapolis Prep in Thompson, Ct., Masciarelli tuned up with some extra races, including the Battle Road Twilight Series Meet 3, where she clocked  9:21.44 in the 3,000 meters.

A year ago, Masciarelli competed in her first outdoor nationals where she finished in 13th place in the mile. A year later, she is a 5K champion with the chance to add another title in Saturday's 2-mile.

"I think it's amazing," Masciarelli said of her development. "I know a lot of my hard work I do over the summer and throughout this whole sophomore year really paid off. Really focusing in on the little details of running and that get you to the next level has helped a lot."

The most entertaining race went last. Under the stadium lights, Xavier CT's Robbie Cozean won boys 5,000 that went down to the wire. Using his trademark late speed, Cozean was able to catch leader Caleb Futter of Christian Academy IN and hold him off to win with a US#1 time of 14:26.18. Futter was second in 14:28.95.

"It was the goal the whole time," Cozean said of winning. "But it's unbelievable."

Added Xavier coach Chris Stonier: “Robbie has closed tremendously hard. Three years of hard work by Robbie. It was absolutely incredible.”

Cozean’s win was the first national title for Xavier since 2007 when Adam Vess won the Nike Outdoor National 5K. He’s scheduled to run in the distance medley relay Sunday as well.

"It means a ton. All my teammates came out to watch. The team is so important. They motivate you to work hard,” Cozean said.

In Friday night's only other final, Skylar Ciccolini of Mifflin County PA, won the girls javelin title with 161-10.

Ciccolini, the national leader at 184-2, won by nearly 12 feet.

Earlier in the day, Bullis School MD got its weekend off to a roaring start when the boys and girls won national titles in the 1,000-meter Swedish Sprint Medley Relay in back-to-back races on the track.

The girls won the 100-200-300-400 relay in 2:09.38. The boys, anchored by Ashton Allen, ran 1:52.41.
