Shaunae Miller-Uibo Destroys 300-Meter World Best at Ostrava Golden Spike

By Adam Kopet

Shaunae Miller-Uibo of the Bahamas took nearly a second off the world best in the 300 meters Thursday at the Ostrava Golden Spike, running 34.41. She broke the 2003 best set by Ana Guevara of Mexico of 35.30.

RESULTS

The 300 meters is not considered a world record event by the IAAF. Therefore, Miller-Uibo's mark is a world best. Nonetheless, it is the fastest 300 meters ever run.

Finishing behind Miller-Uibo were two Americans, Brittany Brown and Jaide Stepter, running 35.91 and 36.12, respectively.

In other sprint news, Christian Coleman did not have the same success as in his last race in Oslo. Racing over 200 meters for the first time since 2017, he led off the bend, but Canada's Andre De Grasse chased him down to take a narrow win. De Grasse won in 19.91 and Coleman was second in 19.97.

For De Grasse, it was his fastest wind-legal time in the 200 meters since the 2016 Olympics. For Coleman, it was his first time under 20 seconds since he ran his personal-best 19.85 at the 2017 NCAA Division 1 East Preliminary.

De Grasse won after finishing second in the 100 meters earlier in the meet. He ran a season's best 10.05 to Mike Rodgers' 10.04.

On the field, Russia's Mariya Lasitskene equaled her personal best in winning the high jump at 6-9 (2.06m). She had the bar raised to a world-record height of 6-10.75 (2.10m), but she was unable to go clear in three attempts.

For the men, Estonia's Magnus Kirt bettered 90 meters in the javelin for the first time in his career. His second-round throw of 296-4 (90.34m) is the best in the world this year.
