In the unofficial Northwest championship, Walla Walla had a slight lead early on, winning four of the seven contested field events. Jahmal Mangarero added a victory in the javelin. The lead bounced back and forth until Tualatin captured victory in the 4x100 relay and then a sweep in the 400 meters. led by Andrew McDade, which secured the win for the Timberwolves and a spot in the second round of the West Region. Kwabena Lynn swept the 100 and 200 for Tualatin. Dominique Loggins won the long jump and Jalen Hale took the triple jump.

Sentinel MT 72, Rocky Mountain ID 64

Rocky Mountain swept the 800 and 3,200, led by wins from Joey Tolman. Three points separated the two teams entering the 4x400 relay. Sentinel’s 3:27.71 best time in the relay edged Rocky Mountain (3:30.76) to advance the Spartans to the second round. Zac Crews and Neil Daly led a sweep for Sentinel in the high jump. Jaden Foster won the 200 and 400 and was part of both winning relays.

Long Beach Poly CA 76, Bishop Gorman NV 51

Long Beach Poly, the CIF Southern Section champion, surprised some by winning this dual against the Nevada state champions. The Nevada school doubled the margin on Poly in the field events 30-15, with dominant wins coming from Kyu Kelly in the long jump and Zion Branch in the triple jump. The track belonged to Jackrabbits, where they swept the 800, led by Everett Steward, and a 1-2 finish by William Frankenfeld and Ronan MacMahon-Staggs in both the 1,600 3,200 meters.

Cleveland NM 85.5, Fort Bend Marshall TX 55.5

Marshall got to within18 points with a 1-2 finish led by Matthias Petterway in the 110-meter high hurdles and a sweep of the 100 meters, led by Bryson Stubblefield. EAST REGIONAL

East Kentwood went 1-2 in the long jump, high jump and the pole vault to give it a lead that it would never relinquish. Wins by Michael Ostuno in the 110-meter high hurdles and 400-meter dash secured the win for the Michigan school and a matchup against Hoover in the second round.

Christopher Columbus FL 67.5, Lowell MA 64.5

Columbus needed to come from behind in this meet after trailing 33-21 to Lowell after the field events. David Ajama won the high jump and 23-foot jumpers Richard Kwaateng and Ajama went 1-2 in the long jump. The lead switched back and forth over the final events. Lowell responded with a sweep, led by Kelvin Santana, to give the Red Raiders a two- point advantage with one event to go. Columbus won that relay easily, in 3:14.12 to Lowell's 3:32.65, to give the Florida champions a narrow escape.

North Central IN 71, Crete-Monee IL 56

This meet was closer than the final score indicated between the Indiana state champions and the Illinois 3A champs. Crete-Monee had a 21-20 edge after the field events. North Central took the lead for good after winning the 4x800 relay and then scored 25 out of a possible 27 points in the distance events. North Central’s Alex Frey and Jack Hawes placed 1-2 to secure the meet win in that event.

Pickerington Central OH 80.5, Bloomfield CT 51.5

It was the track events that saved the Ohio D1 champions in this meet. Bloomfield had a 34.5-10.5 lead after the five scored field events. Sean Dixon-Bodie had a lot to do with that as he swept the long jump, high jump and triple jump for the Hawks. Pickerington Central took the lead for good when it won the 4x100 relay. Evan Matthews won the 110-meter high hurdles, the 400 meters, the 300-meter intermediate hurdles, and also ran on the winning 4x400.
