Here are summaries of second-round meets:

First round  BOYS | GIRLS

TOURNAMENT BRACKETS

WEST REGIONAL

Clovis North CA 82, Fayetteville AR 52

The California state champs had an easier time in the second round as they pulled away to advance to the regional semifinals. Caleb Foster led the Broncos with wins in the long jump, triple jump, and 110-meter high hurdles and ran a leg on the 4x400 relay. Camren Fischer led Fayetteville by winning the 1,600 and 3,200, but lost a close race to Isaiah Galindo in the 800. Isaiah Sategna and Solomon Evans gave Fayetteville a 1-2 finish in the 300-meter hurdles and were part of a 1-2-3 sweep in the high jump.

Tualatin OR 86, Sentinel MT 59

Sentinel enjoyed an advantage in the field events and got to use javelin thrower Rylan Ortt and his 208-8 mark. Despite Mariano Kis’ wins in the shot put and discus, Sentinel held a 40-23 lead through seven field events. Kwabena Lynn won the 100 meters for the Timberwolves, and Sentinel’s Jaden Foster won the 200 and 400. Andrew Payton and Ethan Klein went 1-2 in the 800 and Tualatin dominated the distance events. Luke Marion led a 1-2-3 sweep of the 110-meter hurdles and Tualatin also won the two relays events.

Hopkins MN 79, Long Beach Poly CA 57

It was the field events that Hopkins used to grab a 38-point margin before going to the track. Hopkins sweeps in the pole vault, high jump and triple jump were major factors in deciding the outcome. Even on the track, Joe Fahnbulleh won the 100 and 200 to keep the Royals rolling. Poly’s Everett Steward won the 400 meters and 800 meters. The 1,600 meters featured a tremendous showdown between Eli Hoeft (4:12.67) and the Jackrabbits’ William Frankenfeld (4:13.58). Frankenfeld beat Hoeft in the 3,200 meters. Liam Anderson edged Hopkins’ George Jackson in both hurdles races.

Cleveland NM 72.66, Syracuse UT 63.33

“Cleveland vs. Syracuse” sounds like an AHL hockey matchup in the Rust Belt. However, these two schools from the Rocky Mountains waged one of the tightest dual meets of the second round. Five points separated the two teams after the field events with Syracuse having the advantage, thanks to a sweep in the pole vault and dominance in the javelin (Kaden Gollaher and Samuel Hansen going 1-2). Nathan Kaufusi won the 200 and 400 for the Titans. Cleveland was behind until the 3,200 meters, when Yonas Haile led a sweep for the Storm. Cleveland closed it with a victory in the 4x400 relay.

EAST REGIONAL

Hoover AL 75, East Kentwood MI 57

Hoover had to come from behind to win this meet in order to advance and claim one of the four regional semifinal spots. East Kentwood had a 31-14 lead after the field events and had advantages in all five that were contested. Colton Emeott and Jacob Mirandette went 1-2 in the pole vault. However, the tide turned on the track. A 1-2 finish by Jonathan Martin and Dorian Austin in the 400 meters gave the Alabama school the lead for good. East Kentwood eked out a photo-finish win in the 4x400, 3:18.54 to 3:18.55, but it wasn’t enough.

Christopher Columbus FL 68, North Central IN 63

The lead went back and forth throughout the meet with Columbus only having a two-point advantage after the field events. Cameron Daniel and Xzavier Henderson went 1-2 in the 200 meters to give the Florida champions a bit of a cushion. North Central narrowed the gap when Alex Frey and Jack Hawes placed first and second in the 3,200 meters. Columbus sealed the win by winning the 4x400 relay and a chance to compete against Hoover in the semifinals.

Christian Brothers NJ 65, Pickerington Central OH 58

Field event points were big for CBA again and the Colts staked out to a 38-7 lead through five events. Evan Matthews won both hurdle events and also the 400 meters, and ran on the winning 4x400 relay to lead the effort for the Tigers. CBA’s distance crew, including Tim McInerney, Shaw Powell, Luke Reid and Troy Hill, swept the 1,600 meters and 3,200 meters to help lock down the win.

Weddington NC 76.5, Northwest MD 69.5

Weddington's strength on the track was somewhat offset by Northwest's strength in the jumps, but ultimately a pole vault sweep by the Warriors was responsible for a winning margin. Nick Callis, Connor Blumsack and Collin Hendriksma went 1-2-3. Weddington’s strength from 400 meters to 3,200 meters on the track was somewhat neutralized by Clarence Foote-Talley’s brilliance in the jumps as he led sweeps in the long jump and triple jump.
