Alysha Newman Breaks Canadian Pole Vault Record in Jockgrim, GermanyBy Adam Kopet Alysha Newman won the pole vault Wednesday at the International Pole Vault Meeting in Jockgrim, Germany, breaking her own Canadian pole vault record. Newman cleared 15-7.75 (4.77m) on her third attempt to win the competition over Great Britain's Holly Bradshaw. Bradshaw and China's Xu Huiqin both cleared 15-5 (4.70m), with Bradshaw finishing second with fewer misses in the competition. Newman's previous record of 15-7.25 (4.76m) was set June 7 at the Speed River Inferno in Guelph, Canada. The men's competition was won by Greece's Konstantinos Filippidis with a first-attempt clearance of 18-4.75 (5.61m). Norway's Sondre Guttormsen, who just completed his freshman year at UCLA, finished second with a second-attempt clearance at 18-4.75. Armand "Mondo" Duplantis entered the competition at 18-1 (5.51m), but he was not able to go clear at his opening height. More news |
