Southlake Carroll TX Rising After Strong Run At Woodbridge By Erik Boal, DyeStat Editor Although a number of injuries have affected several of the country’s elite girls programs during the first month of the season, Summit OR has been able to survive thanks to its depth and young talent to remain the top-ranked team. The biggest improvement thus far has come from Southlake Carroll TX, which stepped up against several California and Arizona powers at the 39th Woodbridge Cross Country Classic to place second in the Bob Day girls sweepstakes race. Southlake Carroll tied Buchanan CA for the top spot, but was edged for the championship on a sixth-runner tiebreaker, marking the first time a Texas team had finished as high as second at Woodbridge since 2008. Preseason top 15 teams Wayzata MN, Mountain Vista CO, Niwot CO, North Central WA and Saugus CA have all yet to race their top lineups, but still project to be contenders to win their respective regional meets or secure automatic berths to compete at Nike Cross Nationals. Lone Peak UT and Cherry Creek CO have both secured significant invitational victories and have added even more depth to an already loaded Southwest Region, with the rest of the Desert Vista AZ lineup looking to improve in order to keep pace until junior Grace Ping returns to competition in October. The Midwest Region has also demonstrated its strength thus far, with Beavercreek OH, East Grand Rapids MI, Hilliard Davidson OH and Fort Wayne Carroll IN showing they are capable of keeping pace with the impressive Illinois trio of Naperville North, Yorkville and Downers Grove South. The Southeast has several teams right on the cusp of entering the top 30, many of them looking forward to Oct. 5 at the Great American Cross Country Festival in North Carolina to deliver quality performances worthy of national attention. Plenty of movement can be expected this weekend with the Desert Twilight Festival in Arizona, Roy Griak Invitational in Minnesota, Nike Portland XC Invite in Oregon and both the Bowdoin Park Classic and McQuaid Invitational in New York.
