Summit's Pack Getting Stronger As Season Rolls On By Erik Boal, DyeStat Editor The reigning national champions from Summit OR only appear to be getting stronger, but there are several teams in the Southwest and California that have continued to build momentum with a number of high-profile postseason meets on the schedule in the coming weeks. Summit continued to demonstrate its depth Saturday with four scorers in the top 10 and all seven athletes in the top 20 to produce an impressive effort at the Warner Pacific Classic in Portland. Sophomore Magdalene Williams was the latest underclassmen to deliver a strong showing this season for the Storm with her 15th-place finish, joining freshman Barrett Justema, sophomore Teaghan Knox and junior Jasper Fievet in supporting seniors Fiona Max, Isabel Max and Stella Skovborg. Senior Azza Borovicka Swanson won the JV race, but could also find her way back into the lineup with the Mountain Valley Conference Championship and Oregon state meet looming in the weeks ahead. Four Colorado teams in the top 15, including three in the same classification, will compete in the state meet Saturday in Colorado Springs. Mountain Vista, Cherry Creek and Cherokee Trail will clash in the 5A final, with Niwot looking to repeat in the 4A championship. All four programs will look to achieve significant performances one month out from the NXR Southwest Regional meet in Arizona. Another team that will also factor in the chase for automatic berths and at-large bids in the Southwest region is Lone Peak UT, which captured the first 6A title in program history Wednesday by placing four scorers in the top six – Eliza Arrington, Eliza Mason, Reagan Gardner and MacKenzie Meldrum – at the state championship in Salt Lake City. Springville also returned to the national top 25 with its repeat victory in the Utah 5A final, with three scorers in the top 10 – AnnaBeth Templeman, Sarah Galbraith and Heidi Sumsion – and five athletes in the top 20. Bozeman MT is getting healthy during an important stretch of the season and has elevated into contention for an automatic berth in the Northwest, along with Oregon programs Jesuit and Lincoln. With victories already at the Great American Cross Country Festival and ASICS Clovis Invitational, Great Oak CA will look to secure another significant win Saturday at the 72nd Mt. SAC Invitational in Walnut, Calif. The Wolfpack will square off in the Division 1-2 sweepstakes race against California rivals St. Francis Sacramento and Saugus, along with Arizona power Desert Vista, which is still hoping Grace Ping will return to its lineup in time for the postseason.
