Great Oak Leaps Ahead Of Newbury Park At No. 1 By Paul Schmitz of DyeStat It is the calm before the storm across the Cross Country Nation as many of the large meets that attract huge fields from around the country have come to an end. Most ranked teams are starting conference or early section meets against lesser competition or simply concentrating on workouts and preparing to peak. The exception to this build-up this week happened Wednesday in Utah where the state meet was held in Salt Lake City. Preseason No. 2 Corner Canyon threw down a dominant performance, scoring a mere 22 points in the 6A final. So dominant was the performance that Corner Canyon placed six runners ahead of second-place Davis’ No. 1. Corner Canyon finished with the 2-5 runners in the meet: Caleb Johnson, Mark Boyle, Alex Harbertson and Easton Allred. As a result, this team jumped six spots to No. 3. The Great Oak CA boys took a well-deserved break from racing last week after epic runs on back-to-back Saturdays. The preseason national No. 1 moves back to the top spot after traveling to North Carolina and defeating the two-time defending champions, Loudoun Valley VA, at the Great American Cross Country Festival in North Carolina then flew back to California and defeated Newbury Park CA at the ASICS Clovis Invitational. The list of potential national championship teams has grown from three to four this week, with Great Oak, Newbury Park, Corner Canyon and Loudoun Valley all within striking distance of the title. Preseason No. 9 Wheaton Warrenville South IL slid down the rankings in the first half of the season, but that slide has come to an end. WWS ran within two points of former No. 5 St. Charles East at the Dukane Conference Championships. St. Charles East drops a bit down to No. 8 and the projections for the race in the NXR Midwest is getting tighter each week. Preseason national No. 7 York IL is now also running at full strength for the first time this season and No. 13 Sandburg IL projects close to the top. No. 26 Brighton MI continues to be the wild card of the region and the Midwest has the potential to send more than two teams to Portland. Top 30 14 (28). Wheaton Warrenville-South IL 15 (17). Christian Brothers Academy NJ 19 (4). Fayetteville-Manlius NY More news |
