DyeStat preseason picks to qualify for NXN: Loudoun Valley VA Huntsville AL
Current Prediction: Loudoun Valley VA Severna Park MD
Note: Loudoun Valley VA remains the clear favorite in the NXR Southeast, but behind the two-time defending national champions will be one of the best races of the year. Severna Park MD is the pick join LV. Severna Park has qualified for NXN two times - in 2013 and 2014 and finished 13th in the nation both of those years. The 2019 version dominated the Maryland state meet and will have a chance to come close to that high water mark of 13th place. Also competing for that coveted second spot is Huntsville AL,which opened the season as the darkhorse pick at No. 31 in the nation and No. 2 in the Southeast Regional. No team from Alabama has ever qualified for NXN through the NXR system and only Hoover AL has run in Portland. Hoover received a bid in 2004 during the NTN era of the race. Huntsville won a second consecutive Alabama state title with a 1-5 team average of 15:44, rivaling the 2004 Hoover team as the fastest team in state history.
The Great American XC Festival on Oct. 5 was a virtual NXR SE preview with all of the top teams in the region competing that day. Huntsville struggled a bit and has righted the ship since then. Loudoun Valley and Severena Park went 1-2 for the Southeast teams, but Western Albemarle VA had the second fastest 1-5 team average behind LV and will challege for a bid. Also in the mix are Florida State 2A champion Satellite and 3A champion Belen Jesuit Prep.

DyeStat preseason picks to qualify for NXN: Loudoun Valley VA Pine Crest FL
Current Prediction: Loudoun Valley VA Pine Crest FL
Notes: Following six consecutive appearances by Blacksburg, another program seems primed to lead Virginia at Nike Cross Nationals this season. Loudoun Valley is not only looking to secure its first trip to Portland, but is hoping to join the boys team, which would make The Jungle TC the first program to represent the region with boys and girls squads at NXN in the same year. Midlothian VA had boys and girls teams selected to compete at Nike Team Nationals in 2006. Sophomore Ava Gordon, junior Ricky Fetterolf and senior Elise Abbe lead Loudoun Valley, which prevailed by a 36-59 margin Nov. 16 over Blacksburg in the Class 4A state final. Blacksburg shouldn’t be counted out, with senior Kaitlynn Wolfe and sophomore Audrey Link trying to lead the Bruins to a regional record eighth appearance at the national finals. But it could be a first-time qualifier from Florida that could stand in the way of Blacksburg making history, with Pine Crest looking to become the third team from the state to earn a trip to Portland, joining Episcopal School of Jacksonville in 2005 and Lawton Chiles last season. The senior trio of Tsion Yared, Emily Faulhaber and Maya Beleznay will lead Florida 2A state champion Pine Crest, which finished 22 points behind Loudoun Valley in its lone meeting this season Oct. 5 in the Nike Race of Champions at the Great American Cross Country Festival on the same WakeMed Park course in North Carolina. The North Carolina tandem of Cuthbertson and Chapel Hill have gone back and forth throughout the season, with either team capable of earning an automatic bid to NXN. Cuthbertson, led by senior Gabriella Castro and freshman Lillian Nasta, prevailed by 17 points at the 3A state final Nov. 9. Chapel Hill, featuring sophomores Amelia Maughan and Abby Weber, finished seven points ahead of Cuthbertson when they placed fourth and fifth at Great American. A young Bolles School FL lineup, including junior Maxine Montoya and three freshmen in its lineup, could be a sleeper in the race after remaining competitive against Pine Crest at the 2A state final. |
