2019 Nike Cross Nationals - Boys Race Preview

Could it get any closer than it did last Saturday at the California State XC Meet? Newbury Park CA convincingly won the Division 2 State Title with the fastest team time ever at Woodward Park. Later in the day, Great Oak went out and won the Division 1 State Championship. When all the teams in the five divisions were combined, only three points separated the two teams.

When those two California teams along with 20 other teams step to the line on Saturday morning, the team race could be just as close as what could have happened if Great Oak and Newbury Park had raced against each other last week.

They have raced against each other twice during the season. Newbury Park won by 30 points at the Woodbridge XC Classic in September. Three weeks later at the Asics Clovis Meet, it was Great Oak that had the eight point edge.

The Boys Championship Race at Glendoveer Golf Course could be one of the closest in this meet’s history. You can’t count out two-time defending National Champion Loudoun Valley VA who appears again to be peaking at the right time.

A pair of Illinois schools, St. Charles East IL and Wheaton-Warrenville South, along with Corner Canyon UT are close enough where they could find themselves up on the podium in a top three finish.

Individuals

Is there any other choice than Newbury Park’s Nico Young in this race?

There are, but Young enters this race as the prohibitive favorite. He started his year by running the fastest 3-mile time ever on a cross-country course. His time of 13:39 was 25 seconds ahead of the rest of the field.

Young is ready for the challenge running 14:28 to win the California D2 State title last Saturday. He is familiar with this course. He is the second returning runner from the 2018 NXN race where he finished fourth overall.

There are at least five other runners that I would watch for in the front.

Ryan Schoppe of LaPorte TX – Schoppe enters this race as one of the hottest runners and could be a factor in front. The senior ran a fast 14:14 to win the Texas 6A State championship. He finished second in that race in 2018. Schoppe won the NXR South Regional title. He is the Texas 6A two-time defending champion on the track for 3200-meters. He has also run 14:27 to finish second for 5-kilometers at the Texas Distance Festival last March. This is Ryan’s first national meet.

Evan Holland of Ashland OR – Holland has been undefeated this 2019 XC season including winning the Oregon 5A State title and running 15:02 for the win at NXR Northwest Regional. He also won the state title in 2018. He ran 8:50.29 for 2-miles to finish second at the Brooks PR Invitational last June.

Josh Methner of Hersey IL – The two-time Illinois 3A State champion is having a tremendous senior season. His second state XC title was accomplished when he ran 13:49.86 to break Craig Virgin’s 47-year-old state and course record at Peoria’s Detweiller Park. Methner comes into this meet winning both the NXR Midwest and Foot Locker Midwest regional races. He is a two-time XC All-American finishing 15th last year at the Nike Cross Nationals and then following that the next week by finishing 7th at the Foot Locker Nationals.

Cole Sprout of Valor Christian CO – The top returning runner from last year’s race. Sprout finished third in the 2018 Finals. He won the Colorado Class 5A title for the second year in a row. He won the Colorado Class 4A title as a sophomore in 2017. Sprout is a two-time XC All-American finishing 21st in 2017 and 3rd last year both at the Nike Cross Nationals. He has a track best of 8:40.73 for 3200-meters and 4:04.19 for 1-mile last spring.

Liam Murphy of Allentown NJ – Murphy accepted an at-large individual invitation for this meet after finishing third last Saturday at the Foot Locker Northeast Regional. Murphy won the NJSIAA Meet of Champions the week before. He qualified for the Foot Locker Nationals in 2018 finishing 34th overall. Murphy has run 9:13.93 for 3200-meters on the track last spring.

Outlook – Four of this year’s top seven runners were in this race in 2018 when the Wolfpack finished second overall. What could payoff for this team is that they did not have to run three hard weeks in a row instead putting a lineup in their Sectional race to make it to state.

Great Oak can win this national title if they run a race similar to what they accomplished in winning their D1 State title. The split between top runner Chris Verdugo and fifth runner Mateo Joseph was only 17 seconds.

To finish ahead of Newbury Park, Great Oak needs to have all of their scorers in the first 35 team places with Verdugo placing 15th or better. They will need five runners in the top 85 overall with their first runner across the line before 50th place. This pack running should offset the up front strength that the D2 state champion has. Six runners in before Newbury’s fourth runner would be a big help. Seven runners across the line before Newbury’s fifth runner gives them the slight edge. Big races from Verdugo and Aric Reza will help on Saturday.

Outlook – The sixth-place finish that the Panthers accomplished in last year’s NXN championship race was a test run for what they want to prove on Saturday. Newbury Park’s only hiccup this fall was their second-place finish at Asics Clovis behind Great Oak. The team has been untouchable coming down the stretch. They will hope that the final race of their 2019 season is the best.

Nico Young enters this meet as the favorite after finishing fourth here last year. Jace Aschbrenner has showed great improvement this fall and should be one of the top 15 runners overall on Saturday.

The Panthers have run 74 second and 67 second splits on their top five runners in their past two meets. The split from Aschbrenner to fifth runner Daniel Appleford was 42 seconds at state. That split needs to come down for this team to win. Newbury Park will have Young and Aschbrenner in the first five team places. What they will need is three runners in the top 20 team places and five runners in the top 50 to secure a point total of 110 points or lower. That point total can get them a national championship.

Outlook – It may seem that the two-time defending national champions are miles away from the two California squads. It could be Deja-vu that we have said that before about this team the past two years. We have not seen the best race of the season from the Vikings. We could see that on Saturday morning.

Carlos Schultz has been the team’s top runner in key meets this fall. He should be one of the top 10 team runners in this race. Loudoun Valley has 42 second top five splits in their last two races. That split needs to dip lower by 10 seconds in this race. Kellen Hasle and Kevin Carlson within 20 seconds of Schultz would be a big start. The split from two to five was 24 seconds last week. Those four runners within 18 seconds of each other puts them on the podium. Getting their fifth runner in before Great Oak finishes their scoring puts them in contention to win their third straight NXN title.

Outlook – A team that is on the rise that could find themselves challenging for a top three finish. The Tigers finished only four points behind 3A State Champion St. Charles East in their state race. The following Saturday at the NXR Midwest race, South won by 50 points.

William Hauenstein has been the team’s top runner throughout the season and should be among the top 20 team runners. The key for success for this team has been their tight pack running. Their top five split was only 16 seconds in their state race. It was 34 seconds in their NXR regional race. David Zeller, Ethan Seng, and Jacob Kluckhohn will need to be within 15 seconds of Hauenstein and within 5 seconds of each other. Jared Peaslee staying under 10 seconds of the trio could be the difference if this team lands on the podium.

Five runners in the top 55 team runners (105 overall runners) puts this team into trophy position.

Outlook – The Saints had to wait until last Saturday to find out whether they were one of the four at-large teams heading to Portland. It is a good bet that the Illinois 3A State Champions will take advantage of the opportunity on Saturday morning.

St. Charles East did not run their best race of the season when they finished third at the NXR Midwest Regional and will get a chance to redeem themselves in this meet. Strong races from Bob Liking and Micah Wilson at last Saturday’s Foot Locker Midwest Regional displayed how good this team could race in this meet. Liking finished fourth and will be racing next week in San Diego. Wilson just missed finishing 11th. Liking should be among the top 10 team runners. Wilson should be in the top 20 team runners or could be close to Liking. The two came in together in the 3A state meet.

The top five splits for the team have been around 25 to 26 seconds in their last two races. The problem with the 26 second split at NXR was that the pack was too far back. The Saints are definite trophy contenders. Aidan King, Zach Loomis, and Luke Schildmeyer need to be within 12 seconds of each other in this race. The team needs to have all five runners in before 110th overall (60th team) in order to challenge for a trophy. Liking and Wilson in the first 50 runners helps that.

Outlook – This team came on strong at the end of their regular season winning the Utah 6A State Meet scoring only 22 points ahead of a strong field. The addition of Easton Allred to their lineup before their state regional meet has boosted the Chargers. Allred missed the first half of the season but is in big shape ready for this race. The senior finished fifth in this race in 2018.

Mark Boyle and Caleb Johnson were the front runners for this team along with Allred. Alex Harbertson was among the top four runners in their state race that was only separated by 14 seconds. He was 31 seconds behind Boyle in the regional race.

Corner Canyon could find their way not the first three teams. They will need a team split under 28 seconds and Allred or Boyle in the top 21 overall. Five runners in the first 54 team places puts the Chargers among the first three teams.

Chances are good for the Rams of finishing in the top 10 and possibly challenging for a finish in the top five teams. A third-place finish at the Great American XC Festival, winning the Manhattan HS Invitational and the New England Championships before winning the NXR Northeast Regional last weekend demonstrate that this team has the talent to get to the front.

Jack McLoughlin is having a strong junior season and could be among the top 15 overall runners in this race. Max Di Muccio finished 28 seconds behind McLoughlin last week and leads their pack. The two to five runner split last week was 39 seconds. That time needs to come down by 10 seconds for this team to challenge for a top 10 team finish. The Rams will need three runners in the top 50 team places and all their runners in before 75th (team) in order for a higher finish.

Outlook – The Dolphins are the second of the four at-large teams selected after finishing second behind Newbury Park CA in last week’s California D2 State Meet. The potential is there for Dana Hills to finish among the first 10 teams.

This team could make their presence known in the front with Carrick Denker and Jai Dawson-Johnson good possibilities of finish in the first 50 runners overall and top 15 team runners. The two were separated by 10 seconds last week. Dana Hills have run top five splits between 50 to 55 seconds throughout the season. A top five split of at or under 45 seconds keeps this team in the first 10 squads.

Outlook – The prognosis for this talented team is simple. The Dragons should finish in the top 10 with the strong pack running that they have exhibited towards the end of this season running a 27 second split in winning the Texas 6A State Meet and then running a 40 second split in their NXR South win. This team has the talent. Carroll finished third earlier this season at the Woodbridge XC Classic behind Newbury Park and Great Oak.

The key for this team is to move the pack closer to the front to get near a top five finish. Nate Lannen was the team’s #1 runner at NXR but was the team’s sixth runner at state. A strong race by Lannen could find him among the top 35 overall runners. Solomon Chavez has run strong in recent meets and should be close to Lannen. Keeping the second through fifth runners within 16 seconds of each other puts this team in good position to be among the top half of the standings.

Outlook – The Hornets could be a surprise in the first five teams in this race considering that they save their best race for this Oregon course. This team has one of the strongest top three runners in this meet. The question will be whether their fourth and fifth runners can close the gap in this race.

Peyton Geehrer, Sam Otis, and Geoff Howles were within 11 seconds of each other in their state meet. That gap was 21 seconds in last week’s NXR regional race. Geehrer could be among the top six team runners in this race. Otis and Howles could be in the first 23 runners.

What could hurt this team is the gap between their pack and their fourth runner was 53 seconds in last week’s race. It was 38 seconds in their state race. James Peden and Jack Altmonda need to be within five seconds of each other and within 43 seconds of the pack for this team to climb in the rankings. The closer the pack is, the possibility of a top five finish grows. The larger the gap could mean a finish in the teens.

Outlook – This is a return appearance for the Braves after finishing 15th in last year’s race. Kamiakin has been running strong coming down the stretch winning the Washington 3A State Meet and winning the NXR Northwest Regional.

Sophomore Isaac Teeples has stepped up as the team’s #1 runner. He was the team’s #3 runner in this race a year ago finishing 100th overall. Teeples could be among the top 10 team runners in Saturday’s race. The Braves ran a 59 second top five split in their regional race with their third through fifth runners within four seconds of each other. The team ran a 36 second split in their state race. A split similar to the state race moves this squad into the top 10.

Outlook – Dakota Ridge is the third of four at-large teams in this field after finishing third in the NXR Southwest Regional. The Eagles finished third in last year’s championship race. It could be tough to duplicate that finish in Saturday’s race.

Connor Ohlson earned All-American honors in last year’s race by finishing 10 overall. He could better that finish in Saturday’s race. Jacob White leads the pack behind Ohlson. He will need to stay within 15 seconds of their top runner for good things to happen for this team. The Eagles ran a 78 second top five split in their NXR race with 56 seconds separating their second through fifth runners. A split similar to that in this race keeps this squad between 10 to 15. A better split moves this team up.

Outlook – York is back to this meet for the first time since 2012. This will be the York’s 10th appearance in this meet winning the inaugural NTN Meet in 2004. The Dukes have running their best in the last month finishing third in the Illinois 3A State Meet and then second in the NXR Midwest Invitational. They have defeated both Wheaton-Warrenville South and St. Charles East during the season.

Ethan Kern was slowed by an injury at the beginning of the season and is in peak condition at the right time. Kern and Daniel Klysh could be among the top 30 team runners in this race. Colin Hill is the team’s third runner has been close to the two during the season. Hill staying close moves the team’s chances of finishing higher. Michael Moriarty, Brian Pratt, and Will Yasdick give the Dukes a strong pack in their fourth through sixth spots. The team has run splits in the mid 30’s on their top five all season. Getting out in good position could mean big things for this team who runs their strongest in the final mile.

Outlook – Christian Brothers is back in Portland for the 10 straight year. They will look to improve on last year’s 18th place finish. Shaw Powell has stepped up as the team’s #1 runner this fall. Powell is in position to finish among the top five team runners and even finish among the top 20 overall runners in this race.

The Colts will need big races from Ben Santos and Chris DeSousa. They will need to be within fie seconds of each other and 40 seconds of Powell. The team ran a 54 second team split in their NJSIAA Meet of Champions win. The split was 60 seconds when they finished second last week at NXR Northeast.

Outlook – The Warriors are having a dream season first winning the Virginia Class 3 State title and then earning their first trip to the Nike Cross Nationals by finishing second last week at the NXR Southeast Regional.

Jack Eliason is the team’s top runner finishing seventh in last week’s regional race. He could be among the top 15 team runners in this race. Teammate Joe Hawkes could be among the first 40 team finishers. The team ran a top five 52 second split in last week’s race. The team in winning their state race had only a 41 second split. That kind of split could push this team within the first 15 teams.

Outlook - A pair of second place finishes first at the Texas 6A State Meet and then second in the NXR South Regional brings this team back to the Nike Cross Nationals. Ryan Cardinal could be among the first 10 team runners and leads this team. Ethan Hammer could be among the first 30 team runners. The team ran a 63 second split in their state race but 51 seconds in their regional race. Improving on their regional race places this team closer to the top 10.

Outlook – Mountain Vista ran their best race of the season in finishing second in the NXR Southwest Regional. They will look for a better race on Saturday. The Golden Eagles finished 12th in last year’s race. In finishing second behind Dakota Ridge in their second-place 5A state race, the team’s split was 56 seconds. It was only 38 seconds in their NXR Regional race. Harrison Witt, Dallas Helmerich, and Jack O’Sullivan were separated by 21 seconds in the regional race. Closing that gap moves this squad up in the team standings.

Outlook – It will be a short trip for the Crusaders to get to the Nike Cross Nationals on Saturday. The Portland based team earned that trip by finishing second in the NXR Northwest Regional. Jesuit finished second in the Oregon 6A State Meet. They used a 21 second split on their top five led by John Schuler and Ryan Schumacher to get to this meet. That kind of pack will help on Saturday. That group needs to move up 10 seconds a runner to finish among the first 15 teams.

Outlook – The New York Class B State champions make it back to Portland after finishing second behind Fayetteville-Manlius at last week’s NXR New York Regional. The Spartans finished 14th in this race last year. Ryan Allison has stepped up as the team’s top runner this fall. The sophomore, who was not in the team’s top seven last year, could be among the top 20 team runners in this meet. The team’s top five split of 78 seconds last week could hurt Burnt Hills on Saturday. Closing that gap under 60 seconds could move the Spartans up.

Outlook – The Heartland Regional Champions finished 17 in last year’s meet. They will look to repeat or exceed that performance on Saturday. Finn Sokolowski has been the team’s top runner all season and will lead this team into the meet. The Mustangs only had a 14 second top five split in their regional win. Moving that pack up moves this team up in the standings.

Outlook – Stevens Point finished second behind Middleton WI in the Wisconsin D1 State Meet. They bounced back the following week to earn a trip to the Nike Cross Nationals by finishing second in the NXR Heartland Regional. The Panthers ran a season’s best 22 second top five split in that race led by Jake Lepak. Jacob Bourget was seven seconds behind of Lepak in that race. They could move into the top 20 teams in this meet but will need to move the pack up where Lepak and Bourget finish in the top 60 team runners with the same type of split they ran in their regional race.
