World Champion Runs First 800 Meters Of The Summer; Josh Kerr Runs World-Leading 1,500m

By Doug Binder, DyeStat Editor

Donavan Brazier pushed through his first hard 800 meters of a socially distant season Friday, cruising through the finish line in 1:43.84 at Newberg High in Oregon.

The Big Friendly 3 popped up 19 miles southwest of the Portland Intrasquad IV, where the Bowerman Track Club held an event at Jesuit.

Brazier got pacing for one lap from Derek Holdsworth, before ripping through the second 400 meters by himself. Brazier split 50.8 and 53.04.

The time is a world leader, eclipsing the 1:44.22 that he ran indoors at the NYRR Millrose Games in February.

Brazier, as he did July 17 in the Big Friendly 2 at McKenzie High, closed the night by participating in a mixed gender relay. Once again, he anchored his team by closing a large gap against a female runner this time OTC Elite's Sabrina Southerland to pull out a victory.

Earlier, Josh Kerr of the Brooks Beasts won a showdown with Nike's Craig Engels in the 1,500 meters. Kerr separated from a strong field midway through the race and ran a world-leading time of 3:34.53. Will Paulson of OTC Elite ran 3:35.59 for second place and moved to No. 6 on the all-time Canadian list.

Engels was third in 3:36.01 and Vincent Ciattei of OTC Elite was fourth in 3:36.35.

Shannon Rowbury of Nike took advantage of pacing from teammate Raevyn Rogers on the way to 4:03.62 the third-fastest time recorded outdoors in the world behind BTC members Karissa Schweizer and Shelby Houlihan

In the women's 800 meters, Chanelle Price outdueled Brooks' Nia Akins, 2:01.71 to 2:02.07 flipping the order from the 600 two weeks ago.

Mel Lawrence of Oiselle Little Wing got pacing help from Rowbury and won the women's 3,000 meters in 9:04.78.

In the best race of the night, Nike's Suguru Osako won a sprint to the finish with Brooks' Garrett Heath in the men's 3,000 meters. Osako used one final burst on the inside to get to the finish line first, 7:54.49 to 7:54.79.
