With first-round effort of 74-1.50 (22.59m) in Belgrade, Crouser becomes only thrower in history to achieve mark, increases career total to 104; 2016 Olympic champion has 36 total 22-meter performances this year, including 32 outdoors

Ryan Crouser reached one shot put milestone Thursday during the special showcase event at Republic Square in Belgrade, Serbia, just not the all-time mark he was searching for.

Crouser achieved his 100th career 22-meter performance on his first attempt with an effort of 74 feet, 1.50 inches (22.59m).

He went on to surpass the 22-meter mark four more times to finish his series with five overall, increasing his career total to 104 throws beyond the impressive barrier, including 98 outdoors.

Crouser accumulated 36 total 22-meter performances during the year, 32 during a two-month span outdoors, highlighted by a lifetime-best 75-2 (22.91m) effort July 18 at the American Track League event at Life University in Marietta, Ga.

His fourth-round effort of 74-0.75 (22.57m) gave Crouser 21 career 74-foot throws, all but one coming outdoors. And he just missed another one with his fifth-round mark of 73-11.75 (22.55m).

“I’m happy overall with my throws, especially the three throws over 22.50m,” Crouser told event organizers, who were promoting Belgrade being awarded the 2022 World Indoor Championships.

“It shows consistency and good distances, and when I get consistent, it usually signals I’m ready for another leap forward.”

Crouser surpassed the 22-meter mark seven times in eight outdoor events this year, increasing his career total to 43 competitions, including 39 outdoors.

He produced the best throw ever on Serbian soil Thursday after achieving the top mark anywhere in Europe since 1988 with a winning performance Monday of 74-7.25 (22.74m) at the Hanzekovic Memorial in Zagreb, Croatia.

With the most consistent year in shot put history as his foundation, the 2016 Olympic gold medalist will continue his pursuit of the world record of 75-10.25 (23.12m) achieved in 1990 by fellow American Randy Barnes.

“I was hoping to get 23 meters tonight, but this competition still really excited me with the music and crowds,” Crouser said. “Most of the time I’ve been competing in front of 50 people, so it was great to get a big crowd. I love events like this where we can move it out of the stadium and into the city centre and the streets.”

Fellow American Joe Kovacs, the reigning World champion, took runner-up with a second-round effort of 67-7.50 (20.61m).

Kovacs was second Monday to Crouser with a mark of 69-10.75 (21.30m) in Zagreb.
