Kenya’s Nicholas Kipkorir Kimeli might only have the world-leading performance in the men’s 10,000 meters until Uganda’s Joshua Cheptegei takes aim at the all-time global mark Oct. 7 in Valencia, Spain.

But Kimeli achieved his own memorable effort Saturday at the 49th Golden Spike in the Netherlands, becoming the 65th athlete in history to run under 27 minutes in the 10,000, clocking 26:58.97 at the Sportcomplex de Leisde Hout in Leiden.

Kimeli lowered his previous best of 29:52.15 from 2017 to become the first athlete this year to achieve a sub-27 performance.

Cheptegei will be pursuing the 2005 world record of 26:17.53 achieved by Ethiopia’s Kenenisa Bekele at the NN Valencia World Record Day at Turia Stadium.

Solomon Kiplimo Boit took second in 27:41.10 to improve to the No. 6 global performer this year, as Kenyan athletes have achieved the top 10 times in the world this season.

Mike Foppen placed third overall, capturing the Dutch title in 27:59.10 to ascend to 16th among global competitors this year.

RESULTS

In the women’s 10,000 competition, which was also the Dutch national championship race, former University of Portland athlete Jasmijn Lau won in a personal-best 32:20.75, a 70-second improvement from when she won the title in 33:30.97 last year in Leiden.

Lau elevated to the No. 8 performer in Dutch history and ascended to 14th among global competitors this year. Bo Ummels was second in 32:25.41, improving to the No. 10 all-time Dutch performer and 16th in the world this season.

Britt Ummels clocked 2:02.61 in the women’s 800, with Dafne Schippers winning the women’s 100-meter dash in 11.47 over Great Britain’s Kristal Awuah (11.59), who later prevailed in the 200 in 23.20.

Brazil’s Tiffani Silva Marinho secured victory in the women’s 400 in 52.64.

France’s Christophe Lemaitre triumphed in the men’s 150 in 15.51, with fellow countryman Benjamin Compaore taking the triple jump with an effort of 53-1 (16.18m). Jamaica’s Ryan Shields won the men’s 100 in 10.60.

Dutch athletes swept the women’s field events, as Jessica Schilder won the shot put with an effort of 59-7 (18.16m), Lisanne Schol threw the javelin 189-6 (57.76m), Alida van Daalen produced a mark of 188-11 (57.59m) in the discus throw and Kika van Bergen en Henegouwen prevailed in the long jump with a leap of 20-2.50 (6.16m).

Dutch competitors also won the remaining men’s events, with Liemarvin Bonevacia clocking 21.08 in the 200, Ramsey Angela running 46.49 in the 400 and Jurgen Wielart taking the 800 in 1:48.28.

Menno Vloon cleared 18-10.75 (5.76m) in the pole vault, Jurriaan Wouters hurled the javelin 246 feet (74.99m) and Stephan Dekker triumphed in the discus with a throw of 179-8 (54.77m).
