North Carolina freshman Sasha Neglia and North Carolina State’s Hannah Steelman, a senior transfer from Wofford, both made impressive debuts with their respective programs Friday at a pair of Atlantic Coast Conference triangular meets in Virginia.

Steelman led a sweep of the top five spots by the defending ACC champion Wolfpack at the Virginia Tech Invitational, covering the 6-kilometer layout at the Buford Meredith Cross Country Course in 20 minutes, 36.2 seconds.

“I personally feel very grateful for the opportunity to race in an NC State uniform for the first time. For a little while, there was uncertainty regarding whether we would have a season this fall and I wasn’t sure if my debut would be on a cross country course or on a track later on,” Steelman said. “Racing or not, the group we have is special and I am happy to be a part of it.”

It marked the first cross country event for Steelman since she earned All-America honors for Wofford by placing 23rd at last year’s NCAA Division 1 Championships in Terre Haute, Ind.

Steelman went on to win the 3,000-meter title at the Southern Conference Indoor Championship in her final competition for Wofford, before deciding during the Coronavirus pandemic to transfer to North Carolina State for her final year of eligibility, with Friday marking her first race in 209 days.

“It was fun to finally race again. There was a lot of excitement going into (Friday). We have all been working hard and envisioning a starting line for a while now,” Steelman said. “Our coaches have emphasized how lucky we are to have some races on the schedule this year, so we feel very fortunate for the opportunities.”
