Whether it was a thrilling jumpoff involving a pair of the top female competitors in the CIF-Southern Section or a showcase of two of the elite male athletes in recent years to represent the CIF-Sac Joaquin Section, the Vaulter Club Vaulter Magazine Big Red Barn Fall Fest meet provided an exciting return to the runway for several standout performers for the first time since August in Sun City, Calif.

Tyler Burns, a recent graduate of Oak Ridge High in El Dorado Hills, won the men’s elite section Saturday with a first-attempt clearance at 16 feet, 0.75 inches (4.90m).

Jesuit High senior Etain Goore cleared 15-7 (4.75m) on his third attempt to remain in the competition after Burns achieved a successful clearance with his first opportunity, but missed all three tries at a personal-best 16-0.75.

Burns, who hadn’t participated in head-to-head competition in eight months, had three attempts at a personal-best 16-8.75 (5.10m) to close out a day that had more than 70 combined vaulters entered in beginner, intermediate and elite sections.

Clark Hobbs, a senior at Redwood High in Visalia and representing Sky Jumpers, cleared 14-7.25 (4.45m) on his first attempt to take third. Hobbs was clean on all his early attempts, before missing three opportunities at 15-1 (4.60m).

Westlake High senior Paige Sommers, the California state and national junior class record holder, cleared 12-7.50 (3.85m) on her first attempt to prevail in a sudden-death jumpoff against Peninsula High senior Gabrielle Pack, representing North County Pole Vault.

After both athletes missed three attempts at 12-9.50 (3.90m), they each earned another opportunity at the height in the jumpoff. Once they both missed, the bar was lowered five centimeters, with Pack missing on her attempt.

Sommers, who was competing from a short approach by relying on just six strides instead of her usual seven and using only a 14-foot/150 pole, finally prevailed with a successful clearance at 12-7.50.

Sommers, who cleared a personal-best 14-6 (4.42m) on Feb. 22 at the Thousand Oaks Invitational to achieve both records, was successful on her first attempts Saturday at 11-3.75 (3.45m), 11-9.75 (3.60m) and 12-3.75 (3.75m) in her first competition in 16 weeks.

Pack made all the same heights as Sommers on her first attempt, setting the stage for a combined five opportunities at a potential personal best after she achieved a 12-5 clearance (3.78m) on March 7. It was her third time competing at the Big Red Barn, including twice during the summer.

India Ortiz, representing Riverton High and Utah Pole Vault Academy, took third by clearing 11-9.75 on her first attempt. Sage Creek senior Maya Grudman – competing for North County Pole Vault – cleared the same bars on her first try to take fourth, with Ortiz owning the tiebreaker based on fewer misses at earlier heights.

Allison Leigh, a junior at Del Norte High representing North County Pole Vault, also had an 11-9.75 clearance, but her success at the height came on the second attempt.
