Chelimo and fellow American professional Mason Ferlic, who finished 76th at the World Athletics Cross Country Championships last year in Denmark, are scheduled to compete in one of two races Saturday featuring collegiate and post-collegiate athletes, before high school and middle school events are showcased Sunday.

Ferlic and Brooks professional athlete Amanda Eccleston are both volunteer assistants for Michigan, which will have several athletes competing unattached in the women’s elite/open 6-kilometer race at 10:30 a.m. EST, followed by the men’s elite/open 8-kilometer race at 11:15 a.m. EST.

Former Washington standout and British professional Amy-Eloise Markovc, representing Reebok Boston Track Club, is also entered in the women’s 6-kilometer competition.

In addition to Eccleston and Markovc, there are seven female athletes who placed in the top half of the NCAA Division 1 Championships at the same venue last November that are scheduled to race Saturday, including a pair of returning All-Americans.

Michigan sophomore Ericka VanderLende and Indiana junior Bailey Hertenstein, who placed 25th and 31st in last year’s national final at LaVern Gibson, lead the unattached collegiate entries. Michigan State’s Jenna Magness, Wisconsin’s Alissa Niggemann and Lucinda Crouch, along with Indiana’s Sarah Schmitt all finished in the top 100, with Michigan’s Anna West returning after placing 105th last season.

Emma Wilson, the top female athlete in the NAIA this fall representing Huntington University in Indiana, is also scheduled to compete in her first 6-kilometer race of the season. Wilson, a sophomore, attended Illinois before joining the Foresters during the summer. She placed 186th at the Division 1 Championships last season and returns to LaVern Gibson with increased confidence and an improved level of fitness a year later.

Wisconsin, Berry College from Georgia and Ohio programs John Carroll and Mount Union are the only women’s programs entered to score as teams in the race.

Four returning Division 1 All-Americans are scheduled to join Chelimo and Ferlic in the men’s 8-kilometer competition.

Indiana’s Kyle Mau was 12th last year, Michigan State’s Morgan Beadlescomb took 23rd, with Michigan standouts Devin Meyrer and Jack Aho placing 16th and 40th, respectively.

Former Michigan athlete Isaac Harding, who transferred during the summer to NCAA Division 2 program Grand Valley State, is expected to compete after placing 44th at last year’s Division 1 final in Terre Haute.

Also scheduled to return after finishing in the top half of the championship race last season at LaVern Gibson are Indiana’s Ben Veatch and Arjun Jha, Michigan’s Joost Plaetnick and Jacob Lee, in addition to Wisconsin’s Olin Hacker.

Berry, John Carroll and Mount Union are scheduled to be scoring men’s teams, along with Bradley, Illinois State and Michigan State.

Unattached athletes from Augustana, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, Cincinnati, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, Elon, Emory, Indiana University Kokomo, Indiana State, Iowa, Iowa Central Community College, Kentucky Wesleyan, Manhattan, Purdue, Purdue Northwest, Queens University, Southeast Missouri, Tulsa, Wilmington College and Wright State are also entered in the Saturday races.
