Whittaker's 2:02.07 Smashes Junior Class National Record

If Saturday's results of the invitational girls 800 meters are any indication, a relay team Sunday comprised of Juliette Whittaker, Sophia Gorriaran, Roisin Willis and Bailey Goggans could run down a World U-20 record.

Whittaker, a junior running unattached who attends Mount de Sales Catholic High in Maryland, ran 2:02.07 at The Virginia Showcase at the Virginia Beach Sports Center.

Gorriaran, a sophomore (unattached/Moses Brown RI), was second 2:03.96. Willis, a junior (unattached/Stevens Point WI) was third in 2:04.31. And Goggans, a senior (unattached/Marble Falls TX), was fourth in 2:07.84.

As pent-up athletes from across the country begin to emerge in early 2021, the high quality of Saturday's race is emblematic of a desire to re-start the gears of U.S. track and field as a whole.

Whittaker became the third high school girl in U.S. history to run under 2:03 indoors and she broke the national junior class record held by Athing Mu (2:03.98). It's also a U.S. Olympic Trials qualifier.

Gorriaran's time is a slight PR and she is No. 6 on the all-time list. Willis, who has run 2:03:05 before, is No. 4 on the all-time list.

Goggans ran an indoor PR, but has run 2:04.70 outdoors.

These four are also the top four returners from the pandemic-shortened 2020 indoor season.

They are scheduled to run at about noon Eastern on Sunday in the fastest seeded section of the 4x800. The time to beat is 8:53.67, which was set by members of one school Boys and Girls of Brooklyn in 2002. The outdoor record of 8:37.71 was set by Jamaica's Vere Tech at the 1991 Penn Relays.

Elsewhere on Saturday, the boys 300 meters also lived up to its billing.

IMG Elite FL senior Jaylen Slade ran 32.77 to win the race with a US#2 all-time performance.

Slade beat junior Justin Braun (unattached/Thomas Worthington OH), who ran 33.24 seconds for US#13 all-time.

Senior Sydney Thorvaldson (unattached/Rawlins WY) dominated the girls mile and ran a time of 4:43.90 after going out a blistering pace of 2:16.3. Brooke Rauber of South Tully (Tully NY) was second in 4:49.06.

Senior Nathan Green (unattached/Borah ID) made a long trip out to Virginia to win the boys mile in 4:13.25.

Hali Murphy from Leander Spartans Track Club (St. Dominic Savio TX) won the girls 300 meters in 38.93.

Samuel Austin (unattached/Oviedo FL) won the boys 800 meters wtih a nation-leading time of 1:53.30.

Ava Gordon anchored the NoVa Athletic Club (Loudoun Valley) to victory in the girls 4x1600 relay in 21:03.19. NoVa also won the boys distance medley relay in 10:30.95.

Cooper Mack (unattached/Watertown SD) won the boys shot put with an impressive put of 64-9.

Alyssa Jones of South Dade Express won the girls high jump with a clearance at 5-8. Teammate Brandon Pottinger won the boys high jump with 6-10.
