Camel City Invitational Kicks Off With Four Meet Records

Speedy, Competitive 5,000-Meter Races Jump Start JDL Fast Track And Katelyn Tuohy Makes N.C. State Debut On First Night Of Camel City Invitational

The first session of the Camel City Invitational only consisted of five races Friday, but the meet at JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem, N.C. got off to a rousing start. 

University of Cincinnati's duo of Aaron Bienenfeld and Alec Sandusky ran the two fastest 5,000 meters in facility history and moved into the top 10 on the NCAA Indoor list.

Bienenfield ran 13:41.89 for a seven-second personal best and the win, with Sandusky right behind him at 13:43.02. 

Those are also the two fastest performances in Bearcat history.

In the women's race, Abbey Wheeler of Providence went into the lead before the 2-mile mark and held off North Carolina State sophomore Kelsey Chmiel as both obliterated the meet record and went under 16 minutes. 

Wheeler ran 15:57.27 and Chmiel was next at 15:58.22. 

In the women's distance medley relay, N.C. State freshman Katelyn Tuohy got her first collegiate race under her belt with a lead-off 1,200-meter leg in a competitive race against West Virginia, Virginia Tech and North Carolina.

Tuohy, a three-time Nike Cross Nationals champion and record-breaking track star at North Rockland in New York, split 3:25.8 and handed off the baton roughly tied for second place in the race. 

Virginia Tech anchor Lindsey Butler had a big lead thanks to a 2:07.8 carry on the third leg by Hannah Ballowe

Butler held off N.C. State's Elly Henes for the win, 11:11.78 to 11:15.90. West Virginia was thrd in 11:16.81 and North Carolina was fourth in 11:22.27. 

All four schools helped their chances of qualifying for the NCAA Indoor Championships. 

Miami (Ohio) senior Sean Torpy unleashed a late kick to overtake Virginia Tech's Antonio Lopez Segura to win the men's distance medley relay in 9:37.07, which was another meet record. 

Virginia Tech (9:38.48), North Carolina (9:38.48) and Pitt (9:48.22) placed second, third and fourth. 

Torpy split 4:02.3 on his anchor leg to boost the RedHawks.

The meet resumes Saturday morning at 11 a.m. Eastern.
