Hunter Jones Runs Soph Record In Winning 5,000 Meters; IMG Academy FL Sweeps the DMRs By Mary Albl of DyeStat It was a record-breaking start to the adidas Indoor Nationals on Friday night at Virginia Beach Sports Center. Sophomore Hunter Jones (Benzonia, Mich.) won the 5,000-meter championship in a US#1 time of 14:49.62. His time shattered the sophomore indoor record of 14:54.2 held by Elijah Armstrong (Pocatello, Idaho) since 2013. Fellow sophomore Ty Garrett (Highland Ranch, Colo.) was right behind Jones, also going under the record, clocking 14:50.57 for US#2. The IMG Academy FL boys and girls teams swept the championship distance medley relays with US#1 times to kick off the three-day meet. The girls team composed of Carly McNatt, Jais Ward, Emilia Puskas and Tatum David lowered their nation-leading time to 11:34.86 as it held off Kinetic (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.), which finished in second place (11:50.39). David, a sophomore, ran a final 1,600-meter leg of 4:46.52 to create some separation and lead her team to the national title. The IMG boys followed that performance with a victory as the team of Noah Winters, Carl Hicks, Isaac Carney and Cole Piotrowski finished in 10:13.32. Another IMG Academy athlete, junior Jayden Slade, who broke Noah Lyles’ high school 200 indoor record last Sunday running 20.62, did not run in the 200 prelims Friday, but he is listed to compete in the 60-meter prelims Saturday morning. Other highlights from the opening day, which featured Freshman, Open, Rising Stars and Championship-level races and field events, included Georgetown commit Nicholas Medeiros (Old Bridge, N.J.) winning the boys invitational 1,000 in a US#1 time of 2:28.48. Isaiah Schulties (Stevensville, Md.) was second in US#2 (2:28.67). Senior Makayla Paige (Tewksbury, Mass.), a North Carolina commit, won the girls 1,000 meters championship in 2:49.16, good for US#2. Brooke Rauber (Tully, N.Y.) was second (2:50.13). Both Rauber and Paige are set to run in other distance events this weekend. Junior Caroline Lehman (Tampa, Fla.) ran a US#1 time of 16:53.22 to win the girls championship 5,000. Clara James-Heer, a freshman from Grand Rapids, Mich., finished second in 17:09.62, which is the second-fastest time ever for a freshman. Kent Island TC MD won the boys sprint medley relay in 3:36.93, good for US#2. More news |
