In case Zouhair Talbi hadn’t already done enough to solidify his legacy as one of the elite distance runners in NAIA history following cross country and indoor national championships this year, the Oklahoma City standout elevated himself among the great collegiate competitors, regardless of division or association Friday night at the Sound Running Track Meet in Irvine, Calif.

Talbi, representing Morocco, ran 27 minutes, 20.61 seconds in the 10,000 meters to prevail against Nike professional and member of the World Class Athlete Program Emmanuel Bor (27:22.80) and former Colorado All-American Joe Klecker (27:23.44), now representing On Athletics Club, as all three competitors secured the Olympic standard.

Talbi, who was in third with two laps remaining before covering the final 400 meters in 59.41 seconds, ascended to the No. 2 all-time collegiate competitor. Only Sam Chelanga of Liberty, who clocked 27:08.39 in 2010 has run faster than Talbi.

Chelanga finished fifth Friday in 27:42.02, also trailing Brigham Young star and reigning NCAA cross country champion Conner Mantz, who took over the Division 1 lead at 27:41.16, as 10 athletes overall ran under 28 minutes.

Mantz just missed taking down the program record of 27:41.05 held since 1985 by his coach Ed Eyestone.

Talbi’s performance ranks No. 7 in the world this year, with Bor at No. 9, Klecker ranking 10th and Mantz at No. 20.

Andrea Seccafien, a Nike professional, won the women’s race in a Canadian national record 31:13.94, producing 68-second splits on each of the final two laps to pull away from the pack.

Seccafien smashed the 2015 mark of 31:41.59 established at the Payton Jordan Invitational by Natasha Wodak.

Former New Mexico standout and Kenyan athlete Ednah Kurgat, now representing the U.S. Army, rallied past ASICS professional Sara Hall on the final lap to secure second in 31:21.65. Hall clocked 31:21.90, as the top three finishers all achieved the Olympic standard.

Seccafien ascended to No. 21 in the world this year, Kurgat is No. 23 and Hall ranks 25th.

Makena Morley, also an ASICS professional, finished fourth in 31:25.19, just edging British athletes Amy-Eloise Markovc (31:25.91) and Jessica Judd (31:25.98).

Laura Galvan Rodriguez, who ran the Mexican national 5,000-meter record Sunday with her 15:02.48 performance at the USATF Golden Games and Distance Open at Mt. SAC, ran 31:29.93 to place seventh, as 11 athletes finished under 32 minutes.

Matt McClintock won the second men’s 10,000 section in 28:13.69, an effort that placed him 15th overall combining both races.
