TOURNAMENT BRACKETS

WEST REGIONAL

Chandler AZ 77, Rocky Mountain ID 64

After three previous first-round defeats, Chandler has won for the second time in the 2021 dual meet tournament. The Wolves used three relay wins and domination in the short sprints to beat the Idaho champions. Rocky Mountain has earned a spot on the bracket all five years and reached the second round for the first time since 2016. The trio of Tyson Tippett, Quaron Adams and Eli Sanders swept the 100 meters and freshman Otis Knapper contributed to a sweep in the 200 for Chandler. Rocky Mountain made it close with a sweep in the 1,600 meters, led by Marcus Heemeyer, who also won the 3,200. Aidan Burbank of Rocky Mountain and Khaymin Westbrook of Chandler swapped wins in the hurdles. Nathan Shearman led a Rocky Mountain sweep in the pole vault, but Chandler was strong enough in the remaining field events to hold off the Idahoans with Jamere Haskell taking the triple jump, Ricky Ahumareze grabbing first-place points in the high jump and Amar Elmore winning the discus.

Grandview CO 71, Ruston LA 65

The Colorado 5A champions used a well-rounded effort to slip past Ruston and move into the regional semifinals. Grandview countered Ruston's victories in the 4x100 and 4x400 with 9-0 advantages in both the 110-meter hurdles and the pole vault. Those two events were crucial to the Wolfpack's building an advantage and holding on. Malique Singleton, Sonny Thompkins and Mateo Munoz swept the top three spots in the hurdles. The pole vault crew of Rylen Lippelt, Jackson Blake and Munoz took advantage of a soft spot in the Ruston lineup. Brandon Green won the triple jump, long jump and placed second in the 300-meter hurdles for Ruston. Ke'Travion Hargrove (100), Damarion Rhone (200) and Joshua Anding (400) were all winners for the Bearcats. Grandview's Peter Fox won the 1,600 and 3,200.

Century ND 96, Sherwood OR 49

The North Dakota state champions suffocated Oregon's top team with superior firepower in the hurdles, sprints and jumps to advance easily to the regional semifionals. Wade James collected a 100-200 sprint double and led sweeps for the Patriots in both events. Brock Johnsen (110 hurdles) and Clay Radenz (300 hurdles) also led sweeps as the score ballooned on the Bowmen. Distance runners Jeffery Rogers and James Crabtree and the javelin group of Austin Milton, Asher Krauel and Byran Culbertson, plus Noah Culbertson's win in the shot put against Century's Andrew Leingang, were among the few highlights for Sherwood, a newcomer to the tournament. Kenneth Brako (triple jump), Braden Brown (long jump and high jump) were also winners for Century.

Humble Summer Creek TX 72, Elkhorn South NE 64

The Texas 6A champions withstood a serious challenge from the Nebraska state champs from Omaha in a dual meet with high quality results throughout. Humble Summer Creek needed its stars to shine. Jalan Rivers took the high jump at 7-1 to beat Elkhorn South tandem Reid Nelson (6-10) and Brian Kardell (6-9). In the 800 meters, Darius Rainey got the victory in the 800 over Elkhorn South's Gabe Hinrichs, 1:52.48 to 1:52.61. Both teams had moments of dominance. Humble Summer Creek's hurdles crew swept the 110s and 300s with Barry Richards (13.31) and Donovan Bradley (37.68) picking up wins. Hinrichs and the Storm swept the 1,600 and 3,200. Kevin Grubbs gave Summer Creek important wins in the shot put and discus and the Bulldogs took both relays.

EAST REGIONAL

Carrollton GA 97, Niceville FL 44

The Georgia state champions piled up a whopping 72-15 advantage on the track, sweeping the distance events, hurdles and the 4x100 and 4x400 relays. Niceville went to work in the field events, but a 29-25 advantage there was not nearly enough to make this competitive. Taariq Miles (100), Jaylen Marsh (400), Justin Parham (800), Collin Jones (1,600 and 3,200), Zalen Cooke (110 hurdles) and David Johns (300 hurdles) all won for Carrollton. Niceville put three throwers ahead of Carrollton's top guy, with Ben Miazga leading the way in the shot put and Mitchell Ratley taking the win in the discus. By the time Carrollton's Grant Brisco and Kareem Nazim went 1-2 in the pole vault, the door was already slammed shut on Niceville's hopes of advancing.

Cuthbertson NC 74, Neuqua Valley IL 72

In the closest matchup of the second round, Cuthbertson proved to be a bit too strong in the relays and moved past the Illinois 3A champion on the way to a date in the regional semifinals. Jacob Koerner was not needed in the 100 meters, despite having the fastest time on either team, and was used in the 200, the 4x100, 4x200 and 4x400 -- all wins for the Cavaliers. Brandon Moore won both hurdle events as well. Neuqua Valley drew close thanks to better depth in the pole vault, long jump and triple jump -- events that could potentially give Cuthbertson trouble in the next round. Martin Kiefer and Elijah Darden went 1-2 for Neuqua Valley in the discus.

State College PA 84, Pickerington North OH 57

Field event strength powered State College into the regional semifinals as the Pennsylvania champions had a 38-16 advantage in the six events contested off the track. Conrad Moore won the high jump and long jump, Ian Dorefice took the pole vault and Ben Spencer and Mitchell Maher got key points in the throws for the Little Lions. The track events swung back and forth and remained competitive throughout. State College won the 4x100 and Pickerington North took the 4x400. Brady Biggers won three events for State College (800 meters, 1,600 meters and 3,200 meters) and was on the winning 4x800 relay.

Carmel IN 70, Dillard FL 62

The Indiana state champions offset Dillard's speed in the sprints with one of the best distance groups in the U.S., absorbed a couple of relay losses, and then powered into the third round with superior field events. Two of the events that helped swing the meet in Carmel's favor were the discus, won by Nolan Ring with Mark Herman taking second, and the high jump, where Aydrian Caldwell and Carver Wood went 1-2. Carmel also won a competitive 4x800 relay, 7:44.83 to 7:52.00. Owen Schafer's victory in the 400 meters pushed back against Dillard's decisive sweeps of the 100 and 200, won by Devaughn Mortimer and Chris Johnson, respectively.
