Seven weeks after helping Newbury Park complete the most dominant and memorable boys cross country season in prep history in Alabama at the RunningLane Championships presented by Garmin, Colin Sahlman, Lex Young and Aaron Sahlman returned to competition Saturday at the latest edition of the Sundown Track Series organized by their coach Sean Brosnan.

But despite the success achieved by Aaron Sahlman in the 800 meters and the excellence produced in the mile by Colin Sahlman and Young, the most thrilling moment of the event came during the stretch run of the boys 3,200 involving Newbury Park’s Daniel Appleford and Logan Marek of Ironwood Ridge in Arizona.

Appleford led for the first six laps, but Marek pulled in front entering the final 400 and was able to close in 61.9 seconds, holding off Appleford by a 9:00.61 to 9:00.97 margin at Eastmark High in Mesa.

Marek lowered his previous-best performance from the Arizona Division 2 state final in May by 20 seconds, with Appleford just missing a second career sub-9 effort after running 8:56.77 at the Arcadia Invitational in May.

Newbury Park’s Hector Martinez ran 9:13.01 and Terrence Keyes from Gilbert High in Arizona clocked 9;14.88.

Colin Sahlman, a Northern Arizona signee, clocked 4:05.13 to secure victory in the mile, followed by Young in 4:08.96.

Sahlman achieved a 1,600-meter split of 4:03.76 and Young ran 4:07.51.

During a Sundown Track Series event in March at Queen Creek High in Arizona, Sahlman ran a personal-best 4:04.86 in the mile, including 4:03.58 for 1,600 meters.

Aaron Sahlman produced a personal-best 1:53.03 in the 800 and Matt Pueschner, Marek’s teammate at Ironwood Ridge, was second in 1:58.28.

Newbury Park is scheduled to compete again indoors Feb. 5 at the Dr. Sander Invitational at The Armory in New York.

Sadie Engelhardt, a freshman at Ventura High in California, prevailed in the girls mile in 4:47.51, followed by Newbury Park athletes Tiffany Sax (5:10.09) and Danielle Brotcke (5:11.40).

Engelhardt, who boasts the fastest mile by a 14-year old female athlete in the world when she ran 4:40.16 in June, achieved a 1,600-meter split Saturday in 4:45.57.

Jonah Archer, a senior at Northwest Christian High in Phoenix, won the opening section of the boys mile in 4:35.77.

Wyatt Williams, a senior at Highland High in Arizona, triumphed in the first section of the boys 3,200 in 9:51.40.
